It is now near 200 years since the
great Polish warrior defeated the
Turks around the walls of Vienna.
The Turks had then as now control
of the Black Sea and the months of
the Danube, and up the great river
their Beets came to the Australian
capital, while their vast hordes
swarmed over the land lik'e de
vouring locusts. They had secured
a revolt of Hungary against Austria
and with the alliance of these fierco
warriors, they had b)roughtL an army
of 300,000:moen to the Austrian capi
tal. Eleven years before, Sobieski
had defeated the Turks in Poland
and driven them out of his country.
He was then but a general in the
army, but his courage and skill had
endeared him to the people and
upon the death of King Cassimir,
he was elected to succeed him (1573.)
Ten years after, with 30,000 chosen
warriors he marched to the relief of
Vienna, and was joined by an equal
number of Germans, The Turks had
thrown lines of circumvallation
around Vienna and lines of counter.

But Sobieski attacked them with
great fury in their intrenchments
(Sept. 12th, 1583,) and roated them
with great slaughter. Ho then
marched into Hungary and subdued
that province back to Austrian rule.

who manage to embroil him in
many difficulties and make his reign

their soverign, But Christendom
should cherish, the memory of the
man who-drove back the hitherto in
vincible masses of the Turks and
stQpped. their farther ravages in
Europe.
