XW Tho compt,rollor-general has
instructed the county auditor that
the sales of delinquent lands in
Fairfield must come off on the 31st
inst. This order is positive and
final.
This morning tho Carrier pays
his usual Christmas visit to the
patrons of THE NEWs AND HERALD.
He has boon faithful in his duties
for the past year, and we trust he
will be remembered.
Mrs. John C. Squier died in this
place on Saturday morning, after a
lingering illness, from consumption.
She was a Miss Davidson, a native
of Charlotto,.N. C., but had resided
almost continuously since her
marriage, eight years ago, in
Winnsboro. She had made many
friends, who sympathize with lier
husband in his deep bereavement.
CONFERENCE AiPolNTAENTs. -The
following are the appointments made
by the Methodist Conference, of
speial interest to our readers:

The quota for Fairfield of the tea
plants that Gen. La Due sent to
South Carolina for distribution was
three. They wvere turned over to
Thos. S. Brice, Esq., by Master
Lipscomb, of the State Grange, and
by him given to Mr. D. R. Elkin,
of Alston. Mrs. WV. R. Robertson
received several from Washington
direct. Colonel Rion has had a tea
plant growving in his garden for
years. ______

Fairfield for the year 1876, the taxes
of which have been just paid :

The county is now froo from all
debt, except for schools, and will
carry forward at least fivo hundred
dollars from 1876 to 1877. The
school claims outstanding, that will
not be paid, are estimated at only
about one thousand dollars. While
the condition of the people in the
county is distressing, the condition
of the county treasury is very
gratifying, and compares favorably
with that of any other county.
SCHOOL NOTICE.
T HERE will bo an examination of
colored applicants for positions as
teachers on the ftrst Friday in January,
and of white applicants on the first
Saturday and also on the second Satur
day in January. The examination will
bo held in the Mission School houso, be
ginning at 10, a. in. The examination
will )o partly written, partly oral, on
geography, ortho-raphy, reading, writ
lmg, English grammar, history of the
Unitei States, and for the first grade,
algebra. The law provides (Rovisod
Statutes, page 247, Soction 13.) "It shall
bo the duty of the County Board of Ex
aminers to emntine al candidles for the
profession of teaChCr, and to give to each
person found qualified a certificato set
ting forth the branches of teaching-such
