History of Its Salo to the Japanese Government--A Curious Story. 11om the St. Joseph (Mo.) Xews. ST. JOsEPu, November 16 -Rov .E. R. Hendrix, in his highly 'nteresting lecturo on the Japanoso, mentioned the fact that tho cele brated ran Stonewall was at pros ont owned by the Japanose govern mont. Thoro being a little talo connect ed with the arrival of the Stonewall in Japan, which may interest the roadors of your paper, I will relato it. The Confederate ironclad ram Stonewall came, after the un pleasantness, into the hands of the United States Navy Department, and was, in 1867, sold to the Tycoon of Japan for $1,500,000. The money was paid out of the private funds of the Tycoon, and one of the most trustworthy officers of the United States Navy, Com, mander Brown, was granted one year furlough to accept the position of commandor of the Stonewall and convey her to the Japan Empiro. This was a very hazardous un dertaking, but it was accomplished, and the voyage around the Cape of Good Hope, if properly told, would fill a volumo. In 1868 the Southern Daimios of Japan, jealous of the prominenco the family of the Tycoon had enjoyed in the empire for many generations, captured the Mikado, then at Tokio (not the present. Tokio which then wvas called Jeddo), and declared war against thme Tycoon, who at that time resided in Osaka. The Tycoon escaped from that city, and his castle was fired by Satsuma's army. To give you an idea of the construction of said castle, I will say that some of the stones composing the w'dl around it wvere sixty feet long by forty broad and twenty thick. There being nt o stone of that description found within fifty miles of Osaka, it is impl1ossible to underst, andl in what manner they wore conveyed to Osaka at the building of said castle. The Tycoon fled to the northern p)rovin ces of the emipire, and the Daimios there aided him with an army. Arms and munitions of war wore sold to both p)artios by English and American residents of Japan. Well, the wvar was raging nicely;: nobody could toll who woiuld win, when one fine morning, the Tycoon's iron-clad Stonowvall, steamed into the harbor of Yokohama, flying the Tycoon's ensign on the peak and the Star Spangled Banner on the fore. Of course everybody in Yokohama knew of the sale and departure of the Stonewall, by the Amercan papors, and expected that she would be turned over to th'o Tycoon's agents, who already woere awaiting her arrival. But themy wore not diplomaits, and did not see the "grease" in this arrival. The American Ambassador then in Japan saw his opportunity, andl improved it. Tihe agents of the Tycoon woero told that, as the Stonewall had not yet Japaneso papers, she was yet an American vessel, and.the American Ambassa dor would take charge of her for the time being-"just wvait a few~ days, and all would be satisfactory,' etc. American man-of--war's-men tooli charge of the ram and the Southeri Daimtios were privately informned (of course nof, by the Ambassador) that the Stonewall was in Japan An American missionary, horrifee at the prospect of war being pro. longed by the adldition of the Stonewall to the Tycoon's forces anxious that.'the sacrifice of humai lives should be stopped, and wtor anxious still to get is finge pie in the hp fedn heomethro-etee int tha and the diplomatic brain of the American Embassador being prop orly greased by the application of $160,000 worth of lubricating matQrialti, Vattell on International Law was oponed and the Tycoon l9st the Stonowall. The ship laid in the harbor of Yokohama for somo time, and when tha greaso was dried up and the missionary had sent his dripping ($10,000 worth) home, the vessel for which the Tycoon had paid with his own privato money was turned over to his enemies and aided in giving him the tinishing blow in tho battle of Hakodadi. "GOT Hin TiAlt."-A hater of tobacco asked an old negro woman, the fumes of whose pipe were an, noying him, if she thought she was a Christian. "Yes, bruddor, I'spects I is." "Do you believe in the Bible ?" "Yes, brudder." "Do you know that there is a passage in the Scriptures which Bays that nothing unclean shall inherit tho kingdom of Heaven ?" "Yes, I'v heard it." "Well, Chloe, you smoko; and you cannot ontor the Kingdom of Heaven, because there is nothing so unclean thero as the breath of a smoker. What do you say to that?" "Why, I 'spects to leave my breff behind when I go thar I"--Boson Globe. "Please accepti a lock of my hair," said a hbaclielor to a hmdsome widow wiom he was wooing. "Hadn't you better give me tho wholo wig ?" shie sarcastically asked ; to which ho responded: "You are very biting, madam, considering that your tooth are porcelain." This Sarsaparilla is a combination of vegetable alteratives--Stillingia,Man drake ,Yellow Dock-with the lodlides of Potassium andl Iron, and is the most eflicacious medicine yet known for the dliseases it is intended to cure. its ingredlients ai'o so skilfully. combined that the full alterative effect of each is assured, and while it is so mild as to be harmless even to children, it is still so effectual as to purge out from the system those impurities and corruptions which develop into loathsome disease. The reputation it enjoys is derived from its cures, and1 tne confidence which prominent physicians all over the country repose in it proves their experience of its usefulness. Certificates attesting its virtues have accumulated, and are con staintly beiing received, and as many of these cases are publicly known they furnish convincing evidence at the superiority of this Sarsaparilla over every other alterative medlIcine. So generally is its superiority to any other medicine known that we need (10 no miore than to assure the puibliC that the best qualities it has ever possessed are strictly maintained. .PREPARED BY Dr. J.
