The Detroit Free Press conies to
our olice; and wo have a serious
fault to find with it. It is always
so chock full, up-to.-the-brim-and
running-over with good things that
somno exchango fiend albost in
variably parlois it but00r VOw can
lay hands on it. Th11e Frec Prive
is the princo of fiuiily patpers, and
every one who loves a laugh, and
relishes humor should subscribo to
it. Subscription two dollars a
year, in advance.
We received, last week, a lotter
from "C. M. L." asking us to put
in a column of charades, enigmas,
and puzzles for the benefit of our
young readers. This letter and the
accompanying enigma were mislaid
in some way, and we have been
unable to publish them-a circum
stance we greatly regret. In ans
swer to the request, we would say
that we conltemplaLte a number of
improvements on Tuxs NEws AND
HERAMi, but are unable to make
thenm at present. We hope ere
long to presenit a paper that will
please old and young. If we enljoy,
od the patronage that should be
given by the people of the county
to a home papercl, we could add
many nowv features of interest. We
shall hoar our fair young corro*s~
p)ondent's prolposition in mind.
Our correspondent from Wood
ward's wr'ites :. "Tlhomas Aikoni, anm
industrious, hard working colored
man, living near this place, met
with a sad misfortune on the night
of the 8th inst. About 12 o'clock
he wvas awakened by the roaring of
fire, and upon running out ef his
house, he discovered his horse..
stable, corn..crib and cotton-'house
in flames. The fire had already got
too much headway to save anything.
He lost all of his corn and fodder,
and a bale and a half of cotton in
the seed ; also, the seed out of
fourteen bales of cotton, and his
wagon. Tomn had paid his rent and
for his supplies, and was in a fair
way for making his next crop with
scarcely any assistance, The fire
was evidently the wvork of an incon
diary."
