tenantry mounted on fino horses
the very yeomen of Sussex-formed
a guard of honor to escort the party
to the castlo. Arundol Castlo
Covers five ares, and its lofty
towors looked dim and intijostic on
the heights co"Inanding the sea.
The spiro of the Cattlolic church,
built by the Duko at a cost of
$750,000, could just be soon.
Thither through the strects of
Arundel moved the now brave pro,
Cession.
AN ADDIRS AND A BOUQUET.
Un(er an archway of flowers the
mayor welcomet them at the town
limilits. Thenl amid tre-mend(ous
cheICers th1e horses were taken from
the cartiigv, and thirty woodmen
drew it ' triumphantly within the
castlo gates and up to the great
door, niler the shadow of the vast
pilo, Sombro With ntin tiqul ty. Hero
tho Duchess alightod and was led
to her stately omio by the happy
groom, between a double line of the
servitors of the castle, drawn up to
receive them.
WONnE)RFUT, ILLUMINATIoNS.
A lunch wis given to the peasan
try, and in tho evening an immenso
display of fireworks was g von.
Thorm wore 116 set piccos of the
)yrotoclhnis,t's art, but most won
derful of all was tho ilhitmination of
Arundol Castle itself. 'The outlines
of the castle battlements wore
picked out in fire, and it seemed
that tho fairies had bon building a
castle in the clouds. As a grand
finalo the Wholo town was illumi
nated with the oloectric light in a
triumphal arch of fire. Tho writer
returned to London aftr witn-s
ing these brilliant doings, Con
vinced that a great namo and a
long rent roll are desirable things
in England at least.
A SIONIFIcANT RELIC.
Among the precious presents
mnade by the Duke of Norfolk to
his bride wats a pearl necklace once
worn by the ill-fated Mary Qucen
of Scots ; and when it is remem
bored that the ancestor of the
plreent Dukce, the fourth Duke of
Nor folkI, was beheaded upon Tower
Hill, London, at thme ordlers of the
good Queen Bees, because he had
helped in her sore strait the hapless
and beautiful Queen M~ ary, the
significance of the gift will be seen.
Who has a boettor right to wear the
p earls of Queen Mary than the
bride of the dlescendanlt of him wvho
shared her fate?.
CHEAP CoosIN.-The Philadel
phians are gradually developing a
system for relieving somewhat the
etoernal drudgery of housekeeping.
Family baking of meats, pies, pud
dings, cakes and broad is being per
formed by bakers at a very moderate
charge. Thus for pies, two cents
apiece ; for bread loaves, four cents
a pan ; for rice puddings, three
cents a pan ; for a pan of roas t
moat, five cents P>y this method the
food is bettor cooked, and hours of
tiresome attendance on little cook
ing stoves are saved. Those latter
sup)posedl useful mechanisms in reali
ty furnish a great tax on the house
wifo's time and patience. They
involve continual watching to be
kept at the proper heat. The labor
of ton horses is expended every year
in bringing coal for thorm, and they
keep the atmosphere at an unanK-.~
eraleo temperatureoin warm weather.

MoNEY n SWEET CoRN.-An Ohio
farmer grows over 500 acres of this
crop annually. The drying house
employs over fifty persons. The
fresh oars are steamed five minutes
to "sot the milk ;" the grain is then
.cut off rapidly with cutters having
concave faces ; then spread on
perforated zinc tables, and heat ap
plied'four or five hours from long
furnaces, .stirring constantly ; then
packed in barrels, three bushels
egeh, for shipment. Great care is
