Jubilee over Redoemed Carolina--An y ImienBo Concourse--Arms and Ag - riculture--Distinguished Guests--The Exhibits from Fairfield. S'ICIAL 1'OlUt1IH'N1ENCE NICWS AND IERA.D. COLUNIA, Nov. 17.-The most in portant features of the Fair, just closed in this city, can be briefly set forth for those readers of TnyE NEws AND HERALD who wore not in - attendance. While the officers of the society congratulated them Csolvos upon the snecoss which has greeted their offorts, I am con strained to the belief that, taking all things into consideration, it is not just what they expectod, or hoped for. Nevertheless, it ill becones a newsp, aper man to condemn that ilwhich ho cal so faintly criticise, and perhaps, after all, the mood is not neasured by what has been attained, but by that which under still moro happy auspices (paregorically speak ing) many be looked for. THE FIRST DAY of the Fair found the grounds in somewhat of confusion, incident to the inevitable rush at the last hour. The invinciblo secretary, Col. Thos. W. Holloway, however, by dint of his usual exertions, overcamo such difileulties as presented' themselvos in this respect, so that by the regu lation time on the following morn ing, he was able to nicely adjust his eye-glasses, and tell you to a T where every article placed on exhi bition was exactly located. I am forced, right here, to dopart from my usual custom, and make a remark of a somewhat personal nature. I rise to explain that during the general inspection that followed the admissior of the crowd into the grounds, the off-eyo of the secretary, as well as of several vice presidents who were intently study ing his conutenance, invariably turned to the mnanamnoth field pro ducts of old Fairtiold. Notably, there was a pit upkin-the Brob dignagian proportions of which gave Iuplo evidence of comfortably ac commnodating the entiro list of the judges that had been appointed to pass upon its merits. The well known modesty and integrity of your correspondent will sustain him in the venture that not only the gentlemen so well known in nursery 4 literature, but divers oth6r persons could have nmaintained a respectable establishment within its corporate limits. But I am digressing; The Fair was duly opened, and each particu lar item of the progranne faithfully executed. There was A 1'TS1LAY OF H[oRsEs on WVednesday that would have re. flected credit upon the man who in vented thorm. From the exhibits of one, two, three, four, live, six and seven y'ear olds, the f.ratifying fact wits apparent thait as fine a breed of bloodedl horses Cal) be p)roduced in South Carolina as in Kentucky. THE cHIEF DAY or THlE FAIR was Thursday. The programme was more interesting, and a much 'a larger crowd was attracted on that day than oni any other. The num ber present exceeded the most san -guine exp)ectations, some persons estimating it at from eight to ten thousand. At ten o'clock all the visiting companies were formed into line, and marched to the grounds under command of Gon, F, M. Bam, borg. The parrade cosisted of the Coluimbia Artillery Band, the Walk, er Light Guard, of Richmond, Va., thirty-four men ; Clark Light In 0fatntry, Augusta, forty' mon ;, Caro lina Military Institute Cadets, Charlotte ; Governor's Guard, Co0 lumbia, twenty-six men ; Imo Light In fantry, Chiesteri, thirty-two men; BuThther Riflks, Hodges, thirty-throe tmenl ; Neber Rifles, twenty four men; Carolina Rifle B3atallion, de tachament., Charleuton, twenty men; Riichaland Volunteers, Columbia, twent.y-four mon ; (Columbia Artil, lery, thirty-two men and four gunDS; Rlic hmo nd .11ussars, Augusta, thirty meon. At twelve o'clockc, the contest began, the juidgesf being Lieutenants .BDomtfotrd and Baldwin, 18th U. S. A. and Lieutenanrt Adams, 5ith U. S. Arfillery. Tfhe dirill and the mnanual of aurms woerd almost- perfect, andle "elicited hear by apphilause. VictQwy unalyperhe Gon. The bnner%(U Capt. H. S. Thompson. The result, out of a possible three hundred points, was as follows : Richland Voluntcors, Columbia manual of arms, score 243; on the drill, 242. Clark Light Infantry, Augusta manual of arms, 275; drill, 266. Walker Light Guards, Richmond, Va.-inanual, 235; drill, 261. Governor's Guard, Columnbia manual, 290 ; drill, 292. During the exciting scenes in cident to this triumph the most prominent figures upon the grounds wore, of course, GOVERNORS HAMPTON AND VANCE, who reviewed the troops. The latter remarkod when the Georgians come upon the field that northern Georgia was settled at last by North Carolinians, and their display was quite as creditable to North Carolina as to Georgia. At this point a faint suggestion was made by the Governor of North Carolina to the Governor of -South Carolina, and the reportorial eye next wan dered to the spot whore the two chiefs reviewed the eclipse. The military review by both Governors and their respective staffs is said to have been the finest inspection of ex-Confederate military whiph has taken place since the histor'c sur. render of the "Governor of Georgia East of the Oconee." On Thursday evening the ball of the South Carolina Club was given in the hall of the House of Repre, sentatives. It was a grand affair, four or five hundred of the elite of South Carolina and our sister States being present. THE ATTENDANCE ON FRIDAY, though by no means equal to that. of the preceding day was good. The chief interest centred in the competition of companies of the State outside of Clialeston and Columbia. The competitors were the Lee Light Infantry, the Butler Riflemen, the Newberry Rifles, and the Ninety-Six Rifles. The Butlers won by a score of 212. Next fol-. lowed the team shooting. Eleven teams entered. The German Fusiliers, of Charleston, won by 119 out of a possible 150 ; the Sumter Guards, of Charleston, second, and the Richmond Hussarx third. The Fairfield team showed good pluck, but had bad not the practice of the older teams, and stood lowest on the list. Retracing somewhat, mention should be made of the addresa on Wednesday, of Governor Vance and Mr. H. P. Kimball, the Secre tary of the Winnebago Agricultural Society, of Illinois. It was the latter who, a year ago, broke the ice between the sections by inviting Jefferson Davis to deliver an ad dress. The Radicals howled at the time, but Mr. Kimball was f1riner and swore that Mr. Davis should come. Mr. Davis, however, very properly withdrew his acceptance. This year Governor Hampton was. invited by Mr. Kimball, and went. and made a happy hit. Mr. Kimball delivered an able- address, paying tribute to the South and her sons. It is unnecessary to speak of Gov ernor Vance to those who have heard him, and to those who-have not, he cannot be described. He was enthusiastically recei;ved. It is impossible to review in this. letter THlE NUMEROUS ARTICLEs .p upon exhibition, as embraced in the various departments from the fine arts down to the humblest division, set apart in the exposition, It is a notorious fact that the exertions of' Richland were not more ably seconded anywhere than by old. Fairfield, whose industries were. conspicuous in every department of the exhibit, It was impossible in the crush of people and the generaL flurry pervading the whole fair to remember everything on exhibition, but some articles from Fairfield. arrested attention. Mr. T. W. Rabb, the veteran exhibitor, had a, full display of cereals and peanuts,, also fine hay from Bermuda grass, Mr. W. H. Smith of your town- was exhibiting a fine cotton gin turned. out by him in Mr. Elhott'a well known factory,.a*lso some.ingenious ly designed atterms, of paper pinehed out by I$i if his fingers alone.
