POLITICAL NOTES.
There ought to be an immediato
resumption of civil service reform.
The Presid-i'L doesn't seom to
have rcstoro6 Louisiana to the
Union after all.
Sitting Bull is now among tho
irreconcilables, and he's as obstinate
as Bon Wade.
The country is beginning to feel
as if it would like to soo a little
reform that would reform somo
thing.
The Ohio postmastors rather piti
fully complain that the crowing of
the Democratic roostor disturbs
their rest.
David Davis might make a good
Democratic candidate for the Presi
dony if he could only disguise
himself as a Democrat.
Reconciliation does not seizo the
Republican majority of the United
States Senate with that firm grasp
that was expected.
Thoro' sooms to be a domand in
the United States Sonato for a
Returning Board to count in soino
Senators who have not beon olected.
Packard is still fishing, but in
different waters. Ho has thrown
his line for the Now Orleans Cus
tom House and has become recon
ciled expressly for that purpose.
The opinion is strengthening
among the Republican politicians at
Washington that they had better
hold on to what they have of Hayes,
instead of driving him into the
Democratic ombrace with all his
patronage.
The Executive Department of the
government is suddenly out of blanks
for making nominations of Custom
House officors, and civil servico re
form is at a stand-still. What's the
matter with the Washington print
ers
Senator Conkling presents a peti,=
tion in the Senate for a monument
to the memory of the man wvho
captured Major Andre. It is about
time, too, that Conkling's friends
wore beginning to think about a
monument for him.
Judge Davis, of Illinois, is the
only member of the United States
Senate who enters no party caucus
and proposes to obey his own con
victions en all pulbliC questions.
There's a nest ogg for old-time
Senatoritil dignity and manhood.
The newvspapera are having their
fun out of General McClellan's can.,
didacy. This is all very wvell, but
wvhen the returns of the Jersey oe.
tion begin to come in the General
will have some fun which will beat
that of the newspapers by a large
majority.
Sentor Spencer highly comp)li
monts President Hayes by declar-.
ing himself as opposed to the policy
of the administration. Republican,.
jam may survive any sort of disaf~
fection or rebellion, but it couldn't
stand the favor of such as Spencer
and Patterson.
Senator Simon to Pennsylvania
Representatives in the Legislature:
"This is my son, Don ; you will elect
him to the Senate." Senator Don
to Pennsylvania Representatives in
Congress: "This is my father,
Sunon ; you will p)resent him to be
Minister to England."
The organs that are so disturbed
oy the "liolitical persecution" of the
thieving officials in South Carolina
are kindly requested to notice the
fact that of the jurymoen drawvn for
the trial of these cases 19 are col
ored and4)7 are white, 15 are Demo
erats and 21 are Republicans. That
does not lookc very violontly parti
san.
Every time the people get at the
polls now they ruthlessly and
deliberately kill off at least one of
the Matthews family. Stanley
Matthiews wvas followed to his po-.
litical grave this week by It. Stoekett
Matthews, of Baltimore, and so far
as can be ascertained they are
buried in the same hole'. If the
p,eople will pei'slst in holdinig olee

Matthew&tamiily seem fated to be
The President sat down on the
Scnators and Congrossmon controll
ing appointments ; the Republicans
of the Senato and House have now
sat down on the President's civil
servico policy, and in tho wrangle
the people will, in their disgust, sit
down on both. The only important
nomination, among all the foreign
appointments made, that the Senate
committee has reported, is that of
Langston, colored, Ministor to
Hayti. Scoro one for the black
man.
The Now Orleans Times states
that there is a goneral belief that
Kellogg paid considerable sums to
secure his election to the' Senato by
the Packard Legislature. Nobody
who received money from him has
yet mado confession, but if it is
needed to defeat Kellogg at Wasb,
ington, evidence on this point can
be had in abundance. It is likely it
will not be wanted, however, as it
might make other Senatorial hearts
acho-hoarts that have learned the
way to the Senato through greon
bacek-strown paths.
