Attention is called to the advor-'

uselesa to say anything for it. Its

no dloubt every variety of taste can
be suited.
The Gordon Light Infantry is
drilling regularly, so as to be in
trim for the inspection on WVodnes
day. Of course there will be nothing
like a drill or parade on that occa
sion. Troops without armse cannot
be expeted either to take interest
or to attain proficiency in the drill.
As long as tho State government is
~4 unable to furnish arms,l tho "Vol
unteer State Troops" can do but
little.

James Aiken, immigrant to this
locality from South Carolina, has a
very handsome patch of cotton
growing on the Richardson farm iat
Houston. Much of it wvill ripen and
make a good yield provided frost
does not come on before the middle
of this month. He says it. appears
to grow as large hoi'o as in Carolina.
A stalk brought to this office was
four and a half feet high, with twen
ty large branches, and contained
seventy.-six large bolls of cotton. It
was the largest specimen of the
plant ever seen in this locality.
The James Aiken referred to in
the artice is a colored man working
on the land of R1ev. Willard Richard
son, our present school commis
sioner.
The Adjutant and Inspector Gen

company of Aiken, having been ros
