A little daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Moses Mackorell died in Winnsboro
on Sunday. She had boon in bad
health for some weeks. Her ro
mains were taken to Black8tock on
Monday morning. We tender our
sympathy to the afilicted parents.
A BIG SUNFLOWER.-Wo havo at
our oflice a sunflower, weighing 64
pounds, and measuring 15J inches
in diameter and 45 inches in cir -
cumforenco. The height of the
stalk was .twelve feet. It was grown
in the vegetable garden of Mrs.
James H. Rion, from seed raised
there, and is known as tho "Rus
sian Mannoth" varieLv-whii
bears but one flower to each stalk.

SoL SMITH RUSSELL-The enter
tainment given by Sol Smith
Russell and this quartetto of
vocalists was in every respect a fine
one. The voices are all sweet and
in good training, and each part
was well rendered. The soprano
of Miss Dora Wiley is clear, culti
va,ted and true, while the contralto
of Miss Anna Holbrook is unusual,1y
sweet, Mr. Louis P. Pfau, the
tenor, has an exceptionally soft and
well trained voice, and the basso,
Mr, Jules G. Lumbard, has a voice
st onee fleep, sonorous and mellow.
The piano accompaniments of Miss
Annie L'Estelle wore all good. The
.quartettes, especially "The Car.
nival," were all well rendered,
After the latter, the singers were
encored, and sang, with remarkable
sweetness, a verse of "Sweet
By-and-By." "Racked in the Oradle
of the Deep" by Mr. Jules 0, Lum
bard, was finely sung, bmut his
powers were more' fully shown in
the soo "Let Me Liko a Soldier
Fall"The contralto - solo "<The
Rose Bush," was sung with re
markable swoo tness and feeling.
It was one of th best things of
the ovening. Of course it is useless;
to say anything of Sol Smith Russell
and his comicalities. He fully sis.
tainod his rOputation, and abn1ost
excelled his former acting. He
kept the whole audience between a
smile and a roar during his entire
performance. )Ve are glad that the
audience was such a largo onc-tho
hall being filled. We hope Sol and
his company will soon pay Wimis
boro another visit, and we pledge
them a hearty welcome and an
appreciative audience.

ing held on Saturday on the Libera
question was rather well attended.
June Mobley made his usual speech
about the attractions of Liberia, and
the future before the colored race in
South Carolina. Ho said they
were having a hard timo now, but
things would be much worso here
after, when a Democratic President
shall have been elected-an event
which June seems to think a fore
gone conclusion. Ho tor'r up a
collection to pay his expenses to
Liberia, on his oxploring expedition,
but what .amount was realized we
have not ascortained. We trust it
was small, for we do not wish to
see the colored popl throw away
their money. At the close of the
speccli-making, a branch of the
"Liberian Exodus Association" was
organized, with the following ofi
cers : I. B. Smith (of Rhode Is
land), president ; Ephraim V. John
son (amateur school -master), vice.
president ; Henry Johnson (ox
legislator) secretary ; Georgo Dil,
lard (professional singer of national
reputation), assistant secretary ;
W. J. McDowell (ox legislatoi),
treasurer ; Joseph Thompson (pro
fessional politician), soliciting agont
for Fairfiold county. How far this
board of oflicers will succeed in their
new scheme, timo will show. We
trust they will not confine them
selvos to precept, but enforceo
their teachings by themselvos set
Ling an example. What this Libe
rian movement may como to, of
course we will not undertake to say,
but cortainly it is started in Fair
field by a man who has never dono
a good thing, that we ever heard of,
in all his career. June Mobley, in
by- gone years, did more harm to the
colored peop)le, by his vile and in -
cendiary talk, than all the ku--klux
put together. He is to-day a living
proof of the forbearance of the
white people of Union county. And
yet, under the flimsy guise of an
emigration address, lie takes occa
sion to abuse the Democratic party,
and warn the colored' people of the
dangers to them of a Democratic
administration in the State and
nation. We sincerely hopo Juno
will go-wherever ho wants in
this world, and wvherover he
deserves in the next. As the
colored people have spurned the
white man's counsel in the past, so
we suppose they will in future
follow their leader's, June Mobley
and his wvorthy coadjutors in Fair
field. But they had best lookc
before they leap. Those who know
most of Liberia, think it a splendid
place for a man to starve in, but
rather a poor country to make a
fortune. Yet doubtless somec will
go--and many will not.
