. THE STATE PROSECUTIONS.
A Letter From Senator Butler.
EDoEFIErn, S. C., Sept. 13,.1877.
Captain. James X. Lipscomb,
Vhappet' Depot, S. C.;
MyDju Sin : Your letter of the
10th instant was received last night
on my return from Aiken Court.
"You eneloso a letter of Septcem
ber 2 from Charleston to the New
York &117, written, I presume, by
tIe correspondent of that paper
fr6m Charleston, in which it it
made to appear that I advised the
discontinuance of the proseentions
against the Radical ex-officials, with
sundry other charges which I can
not repeat in detail. You say that
the reading of this letter "produced
a feeling of horror and dread
throughout the State, and many of
your .(my) most devoted political
and perscnal friends are deeply ex
orcised over it," and beg 1ne to
"brand it in the most public and
decided manner."
I proceed to brand it by saying
that whoovor siiys, or intimates, or
hints that I have advised the
discont inua,eo of the said prosecu
tions is a liar, and whoever beliovcs!
it is A simpleton. Now, I think, the
branding part has been done, and
for the lublivit,y, I will have to
depend upon you.
This letter to tho Sun. is written
as I am informed, by a Radical ox
official of South Carolina, nov living
in Charleston, who got his position
by troachory, sustained himself
whilO there by duplicity, and having
boon ousted on account of his imbo
u-ility and venality, now sooks to
make a living by lying and slander.
The letter which you eiloso is a
specimen of his capacity in thIat line
and one copied in the Journul Of
omnnnerce, of the 12th instant,
wherein he rofers to my having pu -
ohnsed a "State warrant," is another.
I never before heard of Sucell ht a)Itper
a "State warran t," such as lhe
describes,- and the statement is,
therefore, a lie muade out of the whole
cloth.
It is bad enough to be villied
andl 'tred by Rad ical political
traders, but when one who hais
tried to (do the becst he could1 for the
State and the restoration of good
government, and who feels that
while he doees not pretend to have
been entirely unselfish, yet lie made
some personal sacrificos for. the
public,.good, has to ha~ 4 bjected to
the suspicion of his .fi ende, who
ought to know that such statements
are false, is somewhat discouraging.
I do not deny that I have exerted
myself earnestly to secure my seat
in the United States Senate. I have
felt that it wvas my duty to do so,
but I have made no bargains to
secure may election, as you yout knowv,
andashall make none to get my sent.
My being seated may help the State
in the estimation of some, but the
seating of my~, comp)etitor would no
doubt be regarded by all as a public
calamity. If I am to suc(ced, I
must be allowved to do sfin my own
way, and not be turned aAido by every
lying scribbler, wvlfo 'ses fit to slander
me ; if not, I had better; abandon
the field, and let Corbin take tihe
seat or some other Richmond enter
the field.
I do not meani by this that I am
beyond or ab)ovecriticismn, but I do
mean to la that suspicions and
"dreadg' based upon01 such
stzff as that contain)ed in the
oitlosod letter to the Sun,
which, in every essential particular
is false ad iar - as i.t ?elates to me,
is disgusting and absurd. I have
had nothing to do with the prosecu
tions of the Radical ex-oilicials. It
is not my business, and I have par.
posoly avoided all conneoJfiopa with
them, Ijbaye expressed my opinion
to members of the commnittee and
to Gener-al Conner, the attorney
genoral, as to the manner of con
ducting those proscutions, and shall
exercise that privilege again whena
ever ng $udgmnen leads ine to do so
and'tho'ed'gdeitnen are willing to
hoar mue.
I think the committee of investi.
gation and the attorney general have
dov~ we[~ uind .re en$rtled to the
higheutd ': mxndations for their
service, b'ut I certainly have a right
to an opinion. My being a senator
Ileot surely doen not denrive me of
this. If it does, the senator elect
may go, and I will maintain my
right,.and if scurvy scribblers mis
represent my opinions and actions,
and friends suspect or doubt thmi,
why I can only despise the one and
pity the oher.
You need not have apologized for
having written me as you have. I
should have felt hurt had you not
done so with the information in your
possession. I beg that you will give
this lotter whatever publicity you
think tho occasio requires. Thank
ing you for your kindness, I am,
very truly, your friend,
