I was last week at the White Sul
phur Springs, in Virginia, where I
Iet Colmmiodoro Pegraml, who is so
well known tliroulglhout Cli country.
III the courso of conversation,
I)Dr. Wi. Hugor, Mr. Frank Huger
and other Charlestonians woro pres,
ent, the Commodoro gave us the
following information, which was so
nIw to all of us, that I. doterminod
to ptublish it, which I now do, with
the Commniodore's concent, that th
geentleman whoso heroic conduct is
niarrated may receive at the hands of
hil fellow citizens that honor which
110 IaS 10 richly merited. In the
year 186-, Commodoro Pogram
then in command of the Nashville,
was, with his wife, in English waters.
One d-ty a very bright-eyed, intelli
gent, well -gmOred young gentle
man, an Englishman, came to hiu,
and itskd that ho might take pas
sage with him to the Southern States,
as he wanted to come and join the
army of the ;outhiern States. Com
iodore Pegrai refused the request,
Saying lie was under ago, and he
could not think of taking the youth
out amnoig strangers, to run all the
risks of war. Tho young lman boN
sovght the Commodore, but in vain
he asked if 4o could get the consent
of his guiardian if he would then let
him ave patssagc ? The Commo
loro still declined. The youth then
went to Hon. AV. Ti. Yancey, then in
London. He so worked upon Mr.
Yanc y's feelings that he wrote an
earnest request to the Commodoro
to bring the young man over. Still
the CoiIodoro refusol. Just then
the Queen of Ei~ng. ,.has it;g gone
down to the coast, and seeing iho
nuscarora and Nashville in port,
ordered both to sea. Thjis CoMImn1d,
for reasons, the CommodorG declined
to obey, and lie went up to London
to arrange for his stay. While away
some hands wVOro shipped on tle
NIshiville, and in due *Woi1rse she plut
otL to Sea. Some days after the
Commodoro was accosted by a very
hbi"ghIt youth, who was all begrimed
with coal dust and dirt. Jie asked
wi) he was and whore lie had como
froi, and to Lis surpriso found it
was the young man who had tried to
come as a passenger. Ho told the
>unComodore lie must overlook it, but
Iad l j dolteriined to fight for the
South. The Cowmoclore, pleased
with his spirit, told the ofi3er of the
ship to pIut him to somei other work.
One day a certain paper passing
thriough [lie young mni's hands to
the Commodore, lie said .it was very
bad Er.glish and if the Commodore
Iwould allow 1him he would correct it.
This was don1eI, andm so excOeen w'is
the replort as made0 out by the youth
that, the Commodore immediately
madlO him the cap1ltain's clerk. On
the arrival of the Nashvillo in the
South ihli Commodore informed the
Secretary of the Navy of his ap
oitet and asked that it be con~~
iimed ; this was at (onco done. Soon
after' this Commnodoro Pegramn was
pult in comand of the James river
squadron, and took the English
youth with him, to whom lie hail be.
come greatly attached. The11 iom
mnodore says more faithful or intel -
ligent service he has nover seen
rendered than <tid that young man
give to a cause for which he had left
country and friends, and had comeC
a porforet stranger to help1 them~i in
their struggle for consatitutional
freedom. T1hie fleet in the James
river wvas for a long while inactivo.
It samsfl that this young man's spirit
chafod, for lhe had come to fight,
and po one night a splash was heard
ailongside of the ship, and soon a
man was seon rowving over toward
the enomy. There wans a general
discharge of guns at him, but it was
not known whiefher he9 was hit or
who he was. The roll was oalled,
and nlon.o was missing but the young
Egihan. The Commodore was
vEngiy muc hurt by this, but he felt
sure it wouldbexpand Afw
days afterwards there was ai yory
heavy engagement, in wvhichl (Cape

thickest. After the fight CJommo-d
(lore Pogramn received ih mlessage
'jrom his relative, saving that thbere
was a young Englishman with them
badly wounded who wished to seo
him. The Commodore went at once.
Captain lPogram told him .that he
had never witnessed such cool
bravery in his life as this young

he had taken part in the fight and
hind beon soverely wounded iis the
leg and the shoulder. 'Tle om

nur sed. While there, an ordsor waf
issued for an examination of men
for offico in tho ordnance depart,
mont. Commodore Pegranq fur.
mished his young friend with books
and came two or threc times a week
to examine him. -Th Cmmodoro
says he progressed so rapidly tlat
soon he found hinself u4able to
examine him, and lie knew more
about it than ho did. He intro
duced the young wounded main to
a certain gentleman in Richmond
who had some very Aio horses.
This gentlemnan conceived such 4e
liking for the intelligent bravo
young fellow that ho offered him the
pick of h.is horses if lie would come
out No. 1 in the examination.. This
