A Missouri Paper's Premiums to Sub
scribors--Tho Distribution of 240
Ladies.
1om the Kansfis CiY (.Io.) ''imes.
The great special premium dis
tribution for unmarried geutlf,omi
subscribers to the -Times caie off
yesterday at the Opcra House, as
ainiounced, and -was t genuino son
sation and unequivocal suceess
Between two and three o'clock the
audienco at the Opora Houso was
largely increased by the presence vf
many ladies and gentlemen, at.,
tracted thither by the matrimonial
drawing sot for throo o'clock.
Every face wore a look of plleasud
expectancy, and when, shortly aftei
thrce o'clock, the general preiniun
distribution was announced as con
oluded, all faces wore a smilo and
oxpectation stood on tiptoe.
Mr. 1,erauk R. Allon, step)piig to
the front of the stage, said tlat in
behalf of the Times ho would stait
that the drawing, though startlingly
novel, was a genuino one. One
hund.red and sixtcon young ladies,
,
from far and 1ear, had requested
the Times to place their names oin
its lift of matrimonial premiums,
atid with their requests had set
letters descriptive of themselves,
their agos, looks, accomplishmcts,
&c,, and had at the same time swnt
their photographs and the co1l,Ment
,of their parents that they shoid do
so. In addition to thi. nounber
there were many ladies who had
asked a place cai the special preiiiim
Jist, but had not as yet Rent their
,phlotographs. From the mn~ass of
letters received, one hundred and
twenty-four had been selected and
their wr'iters wvould b)e termed lisi
No. 2, those who had sent photo.

list No. 1 would comprise one hun

the list No. 2 would comprise one
hmndr~ed and twenty -four' young
lladies. Nearly one thousand gens.
filemen subscribers to the Tlimes
had applied for tickets in the up.ecial
.drawing, each one of whom had
over his own :signaturo stated he
was an unmarried man, and desired
to participate in the distribution.
Mr. Allen stated that the Times
'was author'ised to ~tiransmiit ths

. gentlemen who won their nutmbers,
'with the exception of some few
young ladios who doed'( to heat

.gentlemen before their ph otogr'aphs
'could be sent to the fortunate
bacehelor' or .widower. It was cx
ipccted that a good many friendships
would result from this .interchanige
of corresp)ondence between the fair
premiums and TIimes bachelors and
~widower's, and more thant one

Tho Great Wall of China.
Kidgan commands one of the
pases through tho grott wall of
China. It is thero built of largo
stone, comented togethor with
mortar. It tapers toward the top,
being twenty-ono foot high and
twenty-eight foot wido at the
foundation. At the most important
points, less than a milo apart,
sqatro towers aro erected, built of
bricks. It winds over the crest of
the mouitains, crossing the valleys
at right angles, blocking them with
fort-ificati,ms. Tho Chineso estinmate
its length to be about throo t,bou
mind three hundrod miles, but ia
parts more remote from Lekin the
wall is of inferior construction.
Thero is nothing but a dilapidatod
mud rampart, ts Colonel Proje
valsky saw it on the borders of
Ala-shan and Kanua . It is said to
have been built upward of two ecn
turics befor Cirist, to protect the
empire against the inroads of the
neighboring nomads ; but tie
periodical irruptions of the barba
rians were never checked by this
artificial barrier,
