Where is q-11 the fruit ? We hear
of an abundanco of peaches through
out the county, but have seen few
cand tasted less.
Complaints arO mado that the
bridge over Morris' Crook, between
towaslhip 3 n) . 9 i 1 1), is inl bad
condition. The attention of the
,county commissioners is called to it.
John McMillan, colored, has been
bound over to appear bofore the
circuit qurt in Qctober, and answer
jo -tIlo charge of assaulting an
oflicor while in the di3chargo of his
duty. Tho officer in question is
Policeman J enkins.
Mr. J. R. Garvin, son of Mr.
Leandor Garvin, died on Thursday
last, after a severe illness of two
weeks. The deceased was an in
dustrious mechanic, and in all re
spects a worthy young mane. He
was in the twenty-second year of
his ago.
There was a convention of the
Republica pyof the county in the
court-house on Monday, for what
specific purpose we are not inform
ed. After a lengthy session and
considerable wrangling, the con
vention adjourned without action.
Mr. Theodore lIino has entered
on his duties as superintendqnt of
the Charloate, Columbia and
Augusta Railroad, in the place of
Mr. Thomas Anderson, lately roe
signed. Mr. Kline is an expericnc
ed railroad man, aug will doubtless
prove a most excellent officer.
A good many people are paying
in their taxes, inotwithstanding the
hard times. In seome cases the tax
payer, has paid his whole tax, in
stead pf one-half only, as required
by thp eat of the Legislature. :The
treastur .has collected thus far
about fifteen hundred dollars.
Severe thppder storms visitedy this
~county during the week ending on
the 14th inst. On Wednesday of
that week a mule belonging to Dr.
John Br'ico, on Dumper's Creek,ayas
killed by lightning, and on Satur
day, Capt. James Johnson, of Rocky
Moujnt, lostitw(Jvalable mrly , which
wereo struck while standing under
stipaherry tree during the storm.
The only dissatisfaction wve have
heard expressed about the conven-.
tion was3.over A4he clerk's nomina
tion. We ask, what cause is thor~e
for a bolt against the county com
missionors, one of wvhom was chosen
by acclamation wvith only one dis-.
.senting voice, and the other by a
clear, clean majority in a full vote?
The ladies and gentlemen of
Ridgoway will give an ontertainmont
to night, in aid of the Hampton
Rifle Guard, of that place.' It
promises to be in all respects a
successful affair. We trust a largo
.nmber of peop~le will go dowu
froms Winnsboro. Eveorybt.dy is
interested ipi the R~ifle Guards, and
the two towvns should help each
other in every way.
INsTRUOTION& IN MUso.-Prof. N.

Captain Clowpoy has, as we
know he would, writton a card,
positively doolining the nomination,
and asking his friends not to
destroy the party. It is duo to
Captain Clowney that ho bo not
placed -in a falso position by hii
friends As he is pledged against
having the office, the only end
subsorvod in pushing him would 11
to defeat the Democratic nominee,
and C'aptain Clowney very properly
cannot consont to be used for sucl:
a purpose.
)oio-B'rii:WooD.-Tho citiZens
of Doko held a meeting rocont3
and resolved to chango the nam<
of the place to 1ythowood. The
postmaster general of the Unitoi
States has changed the name of thc
post-oflice, and the Railroad Coin
pany has altered, or will alter, th<
name of the station. The sonoron
dissyllablo "Doko" will no more bc
