Our "Associate" is off on a visa t
to cooler latitudes. We ask, there
fore, that proper allowance be made
for the paucity of local matter in
this issue.
Historians say that such weather
as we are now having is good for
fishing. Can't some of our enter
prising friends make up a party, and
allow us to share in the dividends ?
Don't all speak at once.
PERsoNA.-Rev. C. E. Chichester
returned honme yesterday, from a
pleasant trip to New Orleans, to
attend the meeting of the General
Assembly of his church. We are
pleased to learn that be is iuch im
p'roved ia health,
We have been requested to an
nounee that there will be a meeting
of the Mount Zion Society in the
the Town Hall this morning at 9
o'clock. A full attendance is de
sired, as business of importance will
come up for consideration.
FAIRFIELn FIRE ENGINE COMPANY.
At the meeting of this organization
on Friday night last, a committee
was appointed to make arrangements
for a hop, to be given at an early day
for the resuscitation of the compa
ny's treasury. When the arrange
ments are perfected, due announce
ment will be made in those columns.
We beg leave to call the attention
of our "city fathers" to the con
dition of the covering of the Court
House cistern. There is a hole in it
catused by decay large enough to
admit a good-sized foot, and it is
barely possible that a suit for
damages might be the result unless
it is looked after immediately.
The Mount Zion Society, at its
recent quarterly meeting, appointed
a building committee, consisting of
Messrs, L. N. Withers, James A.
Brice and T. R. Robertson, who
were specially charged with the
matter of repairs on the school
house, and the purchase of neces
sary furniture foi 'the school room.
- The building is sadly in need of re
pair, and we are glad to learn that
the committee have gone to work at
once to make the necessary arrange
mients to remedy the defects. The
school room furniture most desira
ble at this 'time are globes 'and out'
*line maps and it is to be hoped that
the committee will find no trouble
in providing these necessary ar?.
juncts.
"Ye old folkges" are busily engaged
in preparidg theinisettos 'for the
"greate concerto' which they pro..
pose 'to give some evening next
week, and the entertainrient promi
ses to be a complete success. This
is the first time such a concert has
ever been given in Winnsboro, aidd"
the costumes and the musical selec
tions have all been carefully adopted
with a view to the fundamental ,idea
of the entertainmet,--a presentation
of the ways of the oldent time. The
best musical talent~ of the town will
take gart, and the choruses are
being drilled, so tja} ~there may be
- ' nothing to mar tne pleasure of the
entertainment.1 greshments, wifl
be served during the evening. The
proceeds will be devoted to Winna
bore's crack company, the Gordon
Light Infan1try. Funllek particulars
will be given hereafter.
The Columbiq .Regiee,! states
that on Thursday mornig Joe B3e1

Burns1 convIctenfrdri 'thilb -co\nty I(f
the Penitentiary, .all colored, inade
an effort to escae by fllnging into
the river .and h'lariipg der the
islands. 'They. ha Searly reached
one of Ithe isigddat'tl riil before
they werp discovered by the guard
The signal of escape was at once
given, when tho guards along th
line opened a brisk and oontinuou
fire at the oscaping convicts, whici
was kept up until several ljundred
shots were fired. The whole force
of guards wore employed in trying
to capture the convicts, and aftea
much difficulty succeeded. It wai
discovered after the convicts wer<
re-captured that Boltop was shot it
several places, while Johnson had
received a ball in his back whic
passed out through his mouth
Burns was unhurt. Bolton died or
Friday, and Johnson is not expectod
to live. All three of the convict
had been convicted ->f burglary
Joo Belton was a desperado and an
old offender, this last being his thiri
time in the penitentiary. He es
caped once. Several years since, 114
got into an affray with anothoe
colored man and was so badly cut ir
the abdomen that his intestine
protruded, Prior to his last con
viction he was a fugitive from justic
for some time, and on one occasior
fired several shots at his pursuers
It is a fortunate circumstance thai
this hardened and desperate crimi
nal will no longer be a source o1
annoyance to Fairfield county.
After this salutory lesson, it it
hardly probable another attempt tc
escape will soon be made.
A CARD,
MONTICELLO, June 1st, 1877,
Editors of The News and Herald .
It is rumored throughout th<
county that an election will be or
dered at any early day for clerk o:
the court, and there being severe:
aspirants for the nomination by the
Democratic party, I have been
urged by friends to define my posi
tion. I was nominated for the
oflice of clerk of the court by the
county convention, and the recen
election of Messrs. Gaillard and Bric<
shows that the same ticket is still ii
the field, and I therefore claim tha
I am the nominee.
JNo. B. DAvis.
To lte Citizens of Fairfield
County,
I announce myself as a candidate fo
the office of Clerk of the Court for Fair
field county. The following are ny
reasons for seeking the offie: I have a
large family to support, ad children t<
educate by my own efforts. I lost an a
in the service of my eountry, and thi
office would at least be a great help to
man in my situation. So If no othe:
man offers, wvhose qlaims are better, and
you will elect me I p~romnise to fill th<
office honestly, and to the best of m)
ability.
