PROSPECTS FOR A NEW PARTY.
That parties should immediately
break up is too much to expect.
There will be a good deal of manou
vering, and in the North and North
west the Republicans are certainly
going to pieces much faster than
their opponents, while in the South
the Democrats, having all the offices
in their hands, are liable to fall to
pieces almost at once. When the
President's policy broke down the
carpet-baggers, it at the same time
inflicted a fatal blow on the Demo
cratic organization in those States.
I was struck with the remark of a
shrewd politician of the so-called
"independent" class here the other
day on this subject of tho breaking
down of parties:
"I see,' said he, "that the Repub
lican party is gone. Bl3aine is per
fectly right ; it is ruined, and I am
glad of it. It ought to bo ruined
first, for it has been for some time
the most dangerous of parties to
the country. It had got to be too
formidable ;and the men who con
trolled it had got to be a ring who
thought they could do what they
pleased andi fre ible enough to do
a great deal of mischief. The party
ought to break up for the good of
the country."
What the Spirits Did.
The recent suicide of John T.
Day,,proprietop ,of the Windsor
Hobol, .thunost'ati'stocratie hotel' o'f
Ne4 York, ha a sti'ngo story' at
tachod to it. Mr. Daley arrived in
New York six years ago with a for
tune ofi ve 1;undred thousand (ol
lars o ~ d, viibli he had aecuiu
latod .Iy: spoulation in, California.
Not satisfied with this immense sum,
he immediately went into property
speculation in New York, and two
years ago he erected and furnished
the Windsor Hotel. It was origi
nally projected at half a million, it
swallowed upl that amiiounit and half
a million more, leaving him in an
embarrassed condition, which jeo
p~ardized his enltire fortune ; then
came the hard times and the shrink
age of real estate, and the mind of
the great operator staggered and
reeled under the dread fuil load which
was oppressing him, and for a time
ruin stared him in the faco ; at last
he began to consult the spirits and
it was not long till their comunica
tion seemed~ to have Laken complete
p~osse'ssionl of* him. Strange as it
mal~y seem, this practical b~usiness
man, who htad1 energy suflicient to
build up a colossal fortune, who con
trolled vast sums of money, who was
capable of giving direction to hun
dreds of employcos, of managing all
the intricate arrangentents in one of
the most superb hotels in Anmerica"
became a mere shuttlecock in- the
hands of a .spiritual chlatan ; at
last his mind gave way ahU toplod
into ruin, Hie wandered away from
his hotel on Tuesday, May the 1st,
and on the following $fdnday he was
found hanging in g deserted house
on Long Islan ony a short dis

information from Orangeburg is that

ances. Last week, returning from
Saguacho ("a wizard") I tried a
short cut, and, riding over a little
hill, cale suddenly upon a band of
four. Naked, except for a pair of
drawers, they were walking bare
footed through the snow, chanting
sonic melancholy strain, and lashing
their bare bodies with, whips of
soapweed leaves. It is no pc'otical
exaggeration, but the literal fact,
that tho blood was flowing rapidily
down them. Their bodies lookod
like raw steaks, and the heavy sound
of the lashes told of the reality of
the flagellations. Some little dis
tance from them stood a large
wooden cross, which, I was told,
had been carried in procession by
one last yor. Its weight must have
nearly broken his back. Upon it
they crucified one of their number
last spring, binding him fast by
ropes and leaving him so long that
he died."

)ear Sir-As you are an ent ire stranger to me,
I want you to know what V i'ELI N i has done
for Inc. Only those who have been raled frotm
death's door can know the value of such a good
m(dlielne. I am as years of age. 'Three years
ago I was taken sick with what, the doctors call
ed Lumba go. For weeks I was confined to ty
bed. I had three diTferent physicians, without
iiny help. I received no relief ; I was a great
sufferer ; filially I becate entirely helpless. The
last doctor told me there was no hell); he said
he might, possibly save my life by eject ing nor
phline In my arms an(d legs. 'T'he neottrage
ment, for saving Illy life by having this done was
so small a chance I could not, consent to run the
risk. About this time my son read your adver
tisement in our paper, a test imony of a person
who had been very sick with about. the smne
comlplalint., and was cured. My son went right
away to the apothecary store and bought, a hlo
tle of VEO E'PINE. nefore I had used the flrst,
bottle I found great relief ; I could move myself
in bed. After taking three lot ties I was able to
sit, up and move about m(ay room. I eontitlCd
taking the Vegetino, and I was in a few weeks
restored to my former health. ;'hc V Eo ETI NE
caved my life after the physicians said thore was
no help for ie. I have had no doctor since.
If I foel unwell I take a (lose of VEt;EI N ,
and I recommeinl it to my friends.
