Summer is upon us. It is decid
edly hot, and linen clothes are in
great demand.
Mr. James E. Cathcart, the
youngest merchant in town, will
accept the thanks of the oflice for
some very fine cabbage and delicious
bananas. Lovers of good things
will do well to give him a call.
The Charlotte />se'rL'cr has
changed hands-the firm of Jones
& McDowell being dissolved, and
Mr. Charles R. Jones becoming solo
editor and proprietor. The O/>scrnl
er is a good newspaper, and wo pre
diet for it a continuance of its past
success and usefulness.
PEIsONAL.-Messrs. H. A. Gaillard
and Thos. S. Brice, members of the
House of Representatives from this
county, come up on Saturday night
for a short visit to their families.
They returned on Monday morning,
so as to be on hand for that day's
session of the House.
Complaints reach us that some of
our subscribe3rs do not receive their
papers sent through the post-oflice.
We can only repeat what we have
often said before--that the fault is not
in our office. We strongly suspect
that papers are taken from the post
offices by persous to whorn they do
not belong.
The phosphate royalties of the
State should be a fruitful source of
revennie, if properly collected.
Persons vho ought to know, esti
mate the amount of these at $150,
000 a year, while, if illicit phosphate
di;ging were suppressed, this
revenue could be largely increased.
ThIe attention of the authorities
should bie inumediately directed to
this matter,

'The trial of the Ellenfton p)rison~.
crs is nmow iln progress in the United
States court in Chbarleston--Judges
Waite and Bond presiding. The
motions to quash thle jury,panol10 and
to quash the indictment have booen
overruled, and a case is nowv on trial.
Several nogro witnesses have boen
examined, and they 1.ivo every apl
pearance of having boen thoroughly
dirilled. The defence aro confident
of their ability to disprove the
statements of these lying witnessos
and to bring about the triumphant
acquittal of tihe accused.
