" The following anecdote is related ' propos of the Russian Enporor Nicholas, father of the reigning Czar, whose fondness for the stage and artistes led him to institute a 'hieatre1/rancais at St. Petersburg. He always treated the actors with great kindness, almost bordering on inthnacy. The Emperor often took long solitary walks, and to pro vent troubling the tranquility of his promnade, it was strictly forbidden to addreds a word or present a 'petiio to him, under pain of a fine or in prisonmont. ' One day a com, dian mot the Emperor, and removing his bat, bowed respectfully. It hiapponed that this actor was a par ficula 'Avorite of the monarch, and on thid day In question was to ap pear iji a now piece. "Al ! is that you r" 'eaid Nicholas. "Well, my friend,T' 'hope you aro going to make us laugh to-night." "Sire, I shall do my best to pleasO you," was the reply. "Well, well, I trust to you," said the Emperor. Soio steps farther on, as the actor: continued his way, lo was accosted by two officers. "Como with us," said one of them, taking the artist by the armn. "Go with you! Whero to?" "Whore to 7 Why to prison, of course. You have just spoken to the Emperor." "Not at all," said the actor ; "it was his Majesty who spoke to me." "Como, there is no use arguing-march ;" and the poor actor was dragged off to prison and locked up. * It is eight o'clock. The Imperial Theatre is crowded with Russian nobility. The Emperor enters his box, and is received by his ministers and gen orals. Ho bows several times, then site. It is customary in Russia, on the seating of his Majesty, for the performance to commence. Nicho las, like Louis XIV., disliked wait ing; but the performance does not begin. An aid-do-camp is despatch ed to inquire the cause of the delay. He soon returns and announces that the comedian has failed to put in an appearance. A useless search is instituted-the actor has disappear, .ed. The Emperor summons the g~onoral of police. Questioned by his Majesty, lhe knowvs nothing of .the~whereabouts of the actor. "It is your business to knowv everything," says the Czar, with lowering brews. AI give you live minutes to find out, and pull up the curtain. Go." Thereuponal ithe agenits of polico areset to work, and with such sue coss that, at the end of three minutes, the general of police comes ..and announces to his imperial Majesty 1 that the actor has boeon inearceratedl :for haviig dared to address him in the street. The Emperor laughs Jong and heartily. "Go, sir, and ordtor the performance to commnflco, and af ter ,tho representation you 'will brinig the 'hapless prisoner here." Wlion the actor found him self a prisoner, his fury had been uncontrolkhtble. But by dogrees lie had calmed ,down and had determnin od to abide .The course of events, making do, offorts to -regain his liberty. When he appeared on the :stage, the Emperor himself gave the signal for the ovation -which greeted himn..'The assembly :had.learned the whole affair, and was literally convulsed with laugh -ter at the serious face the comedian -wore. At the end of the perform ance ihe was conducted to the imperial box. "My dear fllow,"~ .exchiimed'tko Emperor, who 'could jmot help laughiig at the pitiful inienof the actor, "I am really sorry for your misadventure, and to make you amend, Z grgni you, before you .*ek it, any favor you desire of me." "Sire," sid thte .exasperated come., <dian, still a prey to nervous irrita tion, "I have only one favor to ask, and that is, that you~ nzever speak 1) to me -again." The next day ho re ceived in a caskot, which ibore th( imperial arine, a~ superb ,watch, studded with diamonds. Capt.
