win try for the past two days.
There are quite a number of
criminal cases to be tried at the ap
proaching term of the circuit court.
By the aid of Providence and a
good blackberry crop the peoplO of
Fairfield expect to tug through the
Bummer.
We are requested by Rev. Mr.
Richardson to invite all interested
in the subject of a graded
school for white children to meet at
his school room to morrow after
noon at 4 o'clock. There will lie
prescutel exercises in oral teaching
by me:ns of the object~system.
The Monticello Democratic Club
has recently reorganized, and elected
the following officers :

The fifty- ninth anniversary meeting
of the Fairfield Bible Society, will be

at 12 o'clock, in. The anniversary

THEs MILITARY CoMP'ANY.-The or
ganization of the military company
at this place is nowv complete. The
roll, numbering sixty men, rank
and file, has been forwarded to the
adjutant and inspector general, and
commissions for the officers will be
sent up as soon as practicable. No
name has yet been fixed upon-it
having been thought best to pro
ceed slowly in the matter, with a
view to select a name that will be
generally and permnanently accepta
S ble. The following is a complete

This settles the whole question.
The Democratic officials are now in
undisputed possession of the offices
to which they were elected by the
people. The whole State govern
ment is now working harmoniously
and successfully.

FRUIT RAISING IN NoRTH CAROLINA.
-Mr. G. S. Bellis, a Northern set
ler residing near Littleton, N. C.,
has an orchard of some 26,000 or
30,000 peach trees, embracing over
100 different varieties. He is going
North to make arrangements for his
shipments and sales. He ships
altogether by rail, and expects to
realize $40,000 or $50,000 by his
sales. He has also large strawberry
fields and a fine vineyard. His suc
cess in fruit raising in the old North
State has aroused the interest of the
people there in that culture.
The portrait of Gen. J. E. John
ston is to be painted for the Virginia
State Library, at the request of the
joint committee of the Assembly.
General Johnston has replied to the
committee's letter, saying : "I can
not express to you the gratification
this very high compliment from such
a source gives me, for it would be
too high a reward had I succeeded,
instead of failed, in all I strove to
do for Virginia.
Princess Fredericka, daughter of
the King of Hanover, is certainly
going to be married to the Duke of
Connaught in spite of the reports to
the contrary, She is a very lovely
young worn Lu, not pretty, but of a
sweet nature and very accomplished.
Michigan is said to be going to
prohibit the marriage of cousins in
that State.
