There was no fire engine in th<
town. The entrance to the jail wat

licking downward over the solid

the negroes began to try to cui

them to cut through two or three of
the heavy logs that they might
forco themselves through. They
recommenced their work, and flow
at it with desperation. The inexora
ble flames drew nearer, and the
poor wretches, frantic with panic and
fear, shrieked and prayed and cursed
as they tugged like mad men at the
stubborn and unyielding loge. It
looked at one time as though they
might escape, but the flames sud
denly burst downward through the
upper floor, and swept down tho
outside of the walls, literally on
veloping the fated mon in a net of
flame.

just sold her last picture, "Inkor
