r EseRIPTloN OF TIHLE I--fftf1&sr.
The musical telephone, invented
by Prof. Gray of Chicago, consists
of a key board of two octaves, simi
lar in appearance to that of a piano.
Each key of this instrun nt, when
presser4 the ; operator, or per
former, as ie may be called, sets in
action ia steel reed, tuned to a cer
tain defhuito rate of vibration, like a
tuning fork, and correp1n)$ilig to
its position in the naisical scale.
The vibratign p .the rood, is main
tained h3"olect -magnets placed at
each side of it, and which alternateiy
exercise an attractive force upon it.
One end of the reed is firmly fixed
in a bar while its length is of course
free to vibrate when excited. This
instrument is connected l y means
of an ordinary ikledraph' wire with a
coil encircling a soft bar of iron at
the other cnd of the main line, say
in NOW York, as in th' cxperimonut
by Strakosch. The red touched iii

ber of times to produce the note to
which it is tuned, and every vibria

magnet in New York. If the Phila
delphia operator touches it reed
which vibrates 2,000 times per
second, the batr it New York will
vibr.ite 2;090 tinios. If he wishes a
higher note and touches the reed

--FOR
1877. P
To-day the campaign's fairly closed,
The lucky man is he
Who tal'es his seat on the 4th of Maroh
Our President he'll be
And now the next best thing
Just suited to our mind,
Is where to get the oheapest goods
The best of goods to find.
My friends and I went out one day,
Some newv Spring Goods to buy;
And we resolved,before wo wont,
The different stores to try.
We wandered Winnsboro all around
Until our feet wore sore,
A nid found the very plaoe, at last,
'Iwas SOL WOLFE'S New Cash Store.
Of Hats, Clothing and Boots and Shoes,
The lat"t to our view
The very best styles of Dress Goods,
And Prints so cheap and now,
So then, my good friends, one and all,
Now is your time to try
What Bargains you can get of me
Or, you nced not buy of SOL.
