We call attention to the commn
nication of "Citizen," published in
another column. We fully endorse
his views.
Hayes has at last done something
for Chamberlain. He gave him a
good "square meal" at the White
House.
The news from Wasiningtoii was
according to expectation, and
created little excitement ; but in
tense gratification was generally
expressed that the last lingering
doubts have been removed.
Agricultural liens of all forms are
kept constantly on hand at t he office
of THE NEWs AND' HERALD, or sup
plied at short notice. Satisfaction
guaranteed in this line of work
Prices as low as the lowest.
Judge Reed's decision has put

the regular monthly meeting of the
Fairfield Fire Engine Company will

K will sell excursion tickets at greatly
redneed prices.
The play of Richelieu will be per
formed in Charleston on th4 17th
inst., by a company of amnateurs for
a charitable purpose. The cast is
said to be very strong, and the cos-.
tumes are those worn at the Fifth
Avenue Theatre in New York during
Booth's engagement. It might be
of advaantage to endeavor to prevail
upon this company to visit Winns,
boro, as somethiig of the sort is
much needed here by pleasures
ALL rIon.-The following tele
gram was received at Columbia on
Monday afternoon :
WAsHINoTON, April 2.
HON.W. D. SIMPSoN:-Everything is
satisfactorily and honorably settled.
I expect our people to preserve abso
lute peace and quiet. My word is
pledged for them, and I rely on
them. WADE HAMPTON.
The annual session of the Grand
Lodge of Good Templars will be
held at Spartanburg on Tuesday,
the 24th inst., at 10 o'clock, a. m.
The meeting was first fixed for
Nowberry, but, in consequence of
the recent disastrous fire at that
place, a change has been deemed
proper. Tenplars will govern
themselves accordingly.
A Northern exchange gats off the J
following saucy squib :
lampton says he "likes Cham
berlain personally," and Chamber
lain protests that he "likes Hampton
personally." How amply would the
President's policy be vindicated if
each potentate should discover the
strawberry mark on the left arm of
the other, and the twain should rush
together in a fratern-l hug.
MOUNT Zion INSTITUTE.-The
trustees of Mount Zion Institute
have elected Mr. R. Means Davis
Principal of that "acadeiny. The
school is more prosperous than it
has been for several years, and with
the new order in politics will doubt
less continue to grow. Mr. Davis
has had considerable experience in
teaching in this and other States.
The exercises will continue without
any interruption.
1W- We would request that cone
tract advertisements be changed
either in Tuesdiy's or Satur
day's issue-that is, the copy
should be handed to us on Monday
or Friday morning. The labor
involved in getting off our weekly
edition causes us to be somewhat
pressed for time in getting out
Thursday's issue. We are of course
always ready to change advertise
ments, but it will be an accommoda
tion to us if our contractors will
remember and observe the sugges
tion above made.
It has been been announced that
Governor Hampton will leave Char
lotte to-morrow morning at eight
o'clock on a special train for Colum
bia, and that special rates will be
allowed those who wish to accom
pan him to Columbia. The time
at which the train wvill reach Winns
boro is not given definitely. The
wvhole town should turn out to give
the old hero a rousing reception
especially as his whole journey to
Washington and back has been a
perfect ovation.
A patent medicine man out West
has proposed to advertise with us,
offering as pay therefor a gross of
his Patent Purgative Pills. We
will therefore be prepared to go
into the prize business, and as
chromos are playing out, will offer a
box of Patent Purgativq Pills tb
every new subscriber, between now
and the first of June.
On seond thought, we will give
the pills to those who don't pay.
They aro warranted to kill every
pop.
