Mrs. Goll, the tcmnpcrance advo

Beaufort. A Temperance Union
was organized on Ladies' Island
with forty-four lemlbers and one
at the Atlantic Saw Mills with thir
ty-fivo mnernboes. Strange to say
fifty persons in the wicked city of
Port Royal signed the pledge to
abstain from cocktails. The Union
in Beaufort now has ono hundred
and thirty naues on its roll.
Last Thursday was celebrated in
the Duo West Female College as
MisslMcQnerns' seventy-fifth birth
day. College exercises were sus
pended i part of the day, and a
splendid dinner was given to the
faculty and teuior class by Dr.
Bonner in honor of the event.
Quite a number of handsome prer
onts were given to Miss McQuerns
by her associates and friends, anl
the day passed of most pleasantly.
Miss McQuerns has been iden tified,
with the college at Duo West ever
since its foundation.
Tyron & Cook's store at Ninety-Six
was broken open on last Wednesday
night and robbed of a part of its con
tents. A lot of tobacco, whiskey,
sugar, flour, meat, etc., was carried
off, amounting in value to several
hundred dollars perhaps. Suspi
cion attached to a negro named
Williau Smith, for whse arrest a
warrant was issued by Trial Justice
Rogers. On being arrested Smith
confessed and conducted the parties
interested to a batch of woods near
town wheie~ he pad seoreted his plun
der.
Five more negroes were lodged in
jail at Marion last week, making the
total number of prisoners 26. On
account of the desperate character
of most of the culprits. and the
gravity of the offences with which
they are charged, Sheriff Grice ia
having the jail guarded, four gentle
men being detailed every night for
the purpose.
