A colored woman was run over and
killed by a train on the South Caroli
na Railroad on last Wednesday morn
ing. From some cause no coffin
was furnished for the deceased tobe
interred in, and the body remained
by the roadside during almost the
entire day.
Col. Thomas Taylor, recently
aippointed by Qovernor Hampton to
be State Inspector of Phosphates,
has reguay oned his office in

Up tq Tuesday before last, Col. J.
A. Law, special agent to receive the
Hampton taxes for Dairlington
county, had issued 1,150 receipts,
about sinety of which were is sued to
good substantial colored men, and
had collected $3,260 of the tax.
Theohouse of Mr. J. 3V. Lloyd, on
Dargan street, F1orence, was attack

On last Thureday, near Juneville
in Clarendon county, whilo Mr.
Hoary Tisdale was burning off an
old broom-sedge field, a little son of
Mrs. Eliza Robinson, about 8 years
old, climbed a tree to get out of the
way of the fire, and whilo in the tree
his clothes took fire, from which lie
was burned so badly that he died in
three or four hours.
The residence of Col. T. C
Perrin, at Abbeville, was destroyed
by fire on the morning of the 18th
inst. It was one of the handsomest
buildings in the up-country. Most
of the furniture was saved, but the
house was totally destroyed. The
policy of insurance upon the proper
ty had expired on the Wednesday
preceding the fire.
The Newberry Ierald says t "The

the honor of having first advocated

call in Barnwell county. In no lo
cality that the agent has visited has lie
heard of any one, who has anything
at stake to be affected by good gov
ernment, that is disinclined to pay
his taxes to the Hamptou adminis
I ration. Among those who have
come forward to uphold the lawful

ers.
The county commissioners of
Anderson met on Monday before
last and decided not to impose a tax
for cornty prrposes, which
had been recommended by the
grand jury. The amount of money
alreidy on hand is suflicient for the
support of the poorhiouso for sov
eral months to come, and there is
nol pressing necossity for levying a
c()mlt ribution tax. The expenses of
the court and other denmtnds against
the county will have to wait pay,
ment until the machinery of the
State government is in complete
order.
