On Monday at 8:30 we left, and
reached Hong Kong at 11. a. m.
On the 22d Mr. .Harlan told me
there was to be a public flogging of
two Chinese. I have often seen the
backs of persons in the United
States with marks of the lash, but

been found in Nicarauga, which, if
what is satid of it be trute, is ai
great vegetable curiosity. It has
been named "Plhytolacca Electrica."
It is said to possess ve'ry )ro

ties. The hand is sensibly benuimb
od upon touching the shrub, and the
magnetic influenco is felt at a dis
tango of seven or eight feet. The
magnetic needle is sensibly portur
bate(, becoming more and more so
until it reaches the centre of the
shrub, when the disturbanco is
transformed into a very rapi d gyra
tory movement. The intensity of
the p1heflnmenon varies with the
hours of the day, and at night it is
hardly perceptible. It attains its
maxinum about 2, p. in. in stormy
weather the energy of the action is
augmentol. ' No insects or birds
have been sen on the shrub.
