Chicken Farm Near Gaffney Would
Prove Paying Investment.
Several crates of 'thoroughbred
poultry of different strains came In
by express on No. 11 Friday. The
chickens were bought for breeding
purposes by some of our Gaffney fan
ciers; and, by the way, this city is
getting up quite a reputation for fine
poultry, several of* the breeders hav
ing brought away prizes from some of
the poultry shows in other towns in
the Slate.
The poultry industry is a profitable
one, if conducted right, especially
when fowls are raised for the market,
and as the demand for this class of
produce becomes greater, more peo
ple are entering the business. A
first-class poultry farm near Gaffney,
conducted on a large scale and scien
tific principles would prove a paying
investment for some thrifty, ener
getic person who could, and would,
devote his entire time and attention
to the business, and it is only a mat
ter of time till such an enterprise
will be in operation somewhere in
this community, near enough to the
city to be convenient to the market,
and yet far enough out to get all the 1
benefivs of a country range. The first
man in it will be the one to pull
down the dollars.
Working For a Bridge.
Messrs. W. G. Fowler and T. J.
Estes, from the lower part of 'che
county, were in the city yesterday
circulating a petition asking Chero
kee’s delegation in the legislature to
incorporate in the supply bill a pro
vision to borrow $5,000 for the pur
pose of constructing a bridge across
Broad river about a mile above How
ell's ferry. The citizens signed the
petition pretty freely. It is proposed
that Cherokee and York counties

\ Mr. Folger to Leave.
The many friends in Gaffney of Mr.
A. R. N. Folger will regret to learn
that he has sold his residence prop
erty on Buford street, in this city, and
will go back to Seneca to resume his
former duties there as agent of the
Sou'ihern Railway company, which
position he held prior to his coming
to Gaffney to fill a similar position
for the same company. The work at
this office is heavier 'than at Seneca
—at least, Mr. Folger has more to
00k after—and he concluded that It
would be better for him, both in the
matter of work and monetary remu
neration, to go back to his former po
sition. He will leave as soon as
another man is senv here to take his
place.
Mr. Folger makes friends where-
ever he goes; and though his ad
mirers here regret that he finds it
to his interest to locate elsewhere,
they wish for him that measure of
success which, by his energy, effi
ciency and courteous bearing toward
all wJth whom his business brings
him in contact, he so justly merits.

Senate Elects Smith.
Columbia, Jan. 26.—In the Senate
today 'there was an election held to
fill the vacancy in th< United States
Senate caused by the expiration of
the term of Senator Frank B. Gary.
The Hon. E. D. Smith, of Florence,
the choice of the Democratic party
at the polls, was placed in nomina
tion by the Senator from Richland,
the Hon. Frank H. Weston, and was
elected unanimously.
Johnson Convicted.
Greenville, Jan. 26.—Arthur John
son, colored, was convicted in the
court of general sessions today of at
tempting a criminal assault upon
Miss McClure, a teacher in the Greer
graded school last fall. Johnson de
nied thaj he had any evil intentions.
Sentence has not yet been passed.
A number of Greer people were here
for trial. Johnson came near being
lynched at the time of the deed.
