his cue. Here he is making January
as pleasant as May. Soon He will be
time to “take them off” and “indulge

the town in which you live how in
the name of common sense do you

which we live the best that is in us,
and we believe we get just abotfc as
much out of life as anyone.

After dilly-dallying for a fortnight
the South Carolina legislature will
probably get down to business this
week. That is all right, gentlemen,
it makes no great difference with us
whether you do anything or not. We
have more law now than we can keep
up with.

After a round of entertainments
by his friends in Charleston Presi
dent-elect Taft sailed from that port
ye^erday morning on the United
States Cruiser North Carolina for the
Isthmus of Panama. We hope when
Mr. Taft enters the White House he
will not fail to remember vhat it was
the white people of the South who
entertained him while he sojourned
in Dixie-land.

our people must spend their money

might just as well patronize Char
lotte as any other place. But what
we are after is to Veach them to build
up their own town by patronizing
home merchants wherever possible.

It makes us very tired, indeed, to
have merchants insist on us to urge
Vhe people to trade at home and not
send away to mail order houses or
big city stores for their goods, and
when we go around to settle our ac
counts have presented to us a bill
head printed away from home. We
believe in '. lading at home, but those
who cry out so loudly and persistenly
should certainly be first to set the

You have hit the nail squarely on
Vhe head, Brother Bradford. We have
even paid bills that were made out
on these “stock” bill heads, which
cost the user more than those printed
at home. Why anyone will be so
short-sighted and throw his money
away in this style in preference to
patronizing the home printer and get
better work for less money is a mys
tery to us.

Last year there was considerable
interest taken in the corn contest in
this county and those who took part
in it were the beneficiaries. There
is to bo another contest this year,
and now is the time lo think about
preparing for it. Tie Merchants
and Planters Bank is to give a prize
of $50 in gold for the best acre of up
land com raised in Cherokee. The
officials of the bank desire that every
farmer in Cherokee enVer the con
test. The more contestants the mer
rier. The winner of last year’s prize
—Mr. Perry Hill—is to be debarred
from participation in the convest.
Since The Ledger was the 'first to
offer a prize for the best arce of up
land corn, in Cherokee we feel a deep
interest in the same. Now we pro
pose Vo offer as a prize for the second
best acre $20 in gold. This will be a
double incentive for those who go
after the prize, because if they fail
to land the first they may get the
second. The only stipulation we
make is that the contestant must
be a subscriber to The Ledger in or
der to get the prize. We will let the
same commirtee selected by the bank
be the judge as to the second prize.
Register now and go after this easy
money, farmers of Cherokee. We
want to see every farmer in the coun
ty enVer this contest.
