EVENTS IN GAFFNEY AND CHER OKEE. Recent Happening* in and Around I the City and Other Events Gath ered by the Local News Editor. Cotton sold on the local market yes terday for 8.75. There were only a few bales offered. Miss Mattie Simms had some spe cial exercises in the primary class of •che First Baptist church last Sunday and the exercises were enjoyed by them all. Mob Shifty, a colored man, was tried by a jury in the mayor’s court Wednesday on the charge of retail ing whiskey. He was found guilty and sentenced to pay $100 or serve thifty days on the public works. There will be a meeting of the Board of Trade at the city hall nexi Tuesday night. Secretary Otts has something new to spring on the busi ness men of Gaffney. Every man in- tere&ed in a greater Gaffney should attend. Don’t forget It. Dr. Simms and family had their an nual entertainment of the deacons on Moifday night and on Tuesday night they entertained the Sunday school tfeachers. On Thursday after noon Mri. Simms entertained the Philathea class of which she Is ia« teacher. Mr. James H. Thomas, who former ly lived jn the Asbury section of the county, has moved his family to Gaff- n^y in order to give his children bet ter educational advantages. We wel come Mr. Thomas to our mist and hope his^stay here will be both pleas ant and ^profitable. Messrs. A. S. Booker and W. S. Foutz, of Bluefleld, W. Va., are in She city on business. We unaerstand they are associated with Mr. L. U. Campbell in the developing of the Flint Hill gold mine. The Ledger trusts they will strike pay dirt, if they have not already done so. We hope to have an Interesting story about this mine in the near future. There will be a special meeting of the I. O. O. F., Gaffney Lodge No. 43, at their hall tonight for the purpose of installing officers for the ensuing term. All members are requested to je present and each member is re quested to bring a visitor, either lady or gentleman. Light refreshments will be served in the hall, over the Cherokee Drug Company’s store. Mr. A. B. Smith is the chairman of the entertaining committee. THAT CHRISTMAS EVE KILLING. The Story as Told by One of the Jury of Inquest is Interesting. • Mr. H. J. Queen, of Macedonia, was in the’ city Wednesday. Mr. Queen is one of the jury of inquest into the death of John Fernandez, the color ed man who was shot to death the night before Christmas by Waddy Linder. He says the report publish ed in The Ledger was incorrect in several particulars, and that the fol lowing version of the affair is ac cording to the testimony adduced at the Inquest: The shooting occurred at the home of Fernandez, the man who was kill ed. It was between 11 and 12 o’clock on the night before Christmas. Wad dy Linder and his brother Gent, two white boys, about eighteen and twen ty years of age, went to the home of Fernandez. They were apparently sober when they arrived. There were no other white people present, and no colored people except the members of Fernandez’s family. There was whiskey in the crowd, and the white boys and the colored man all drank some. Finally Gent became intoxicat ed, got sick and told Waddy he had to go out doors to vomit. After he had finished vomiting he called for some water. Fernandez’s little fur- teen-year-old boy told his Hither to get a cup for Gent to drink out of. Waddy said Gent. ha£ a dipper at home to drink out of and seemed to get mad because it had been suggest ed that a cup be furnished his broth er. John Fernandez said: “Wad, you needn’t get mad, he (Gent) can drink out of a dipper here.’’ Waddy said: “I am not mad; give my gun and coat. Gent shan’t drink any water until he gets home.” Waddy got his gun and coat and went out into the yard. As he reached Gent’s side he turned around and pointed his gun at John, who was standing in the door of his house, and fired. The load entered the left breast and John fell dead. Waddy then grabbed Gent by the arm and the two went off down the road towards their home, which was less than a fourth of a mile dis tant. Home-Made Shears. Mr. Wm. Wisher, of Smyrna, was n the city Wednesday. He brought with him a curiosity in the shape of a pair of home-made shears. About fifteen years ago Mr. Wishers plowed up these shears while plowing in his :!ront yard. They are hand-made and are evidently very old. Mr. Wisher says they were probably made by some of old man Dickey Moss’s peo- )le a long time before the war. They lave evidently cut up a lot of home made cloth in years gone by. While playing with an air rifle Wednesday about noon, R. E., the little six-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Hall, accidentally shot his little sister, Annie. The rifle belonged 'to the little . colored boy employed to help about the house. He had re ceived the rifle off a Christmas tree and was so proud of it 'chat he had taken it to Mr. Hall’s to show it.* The little boy got hold of it and went in to the house and pointing it towards his sister pulled the trigger. As he pointed the rifle the little girl threw up her hand and the shot, a BB, passed through the fore finger of the right hand and through the lower lip, striking the teeth. She spit the shot out. The little girl was running about yesterday, apparently not a great deal the worse off for her mis fortune.
