The excessive price of coal caused by the high freight rates prevented acti vity In iron ores, but with the com pletion of the new C., C. & O. road,’ which will greatly decrease the price of coal, Vhe ores In this rich iron dis trict will again attract attention. STAMP MILL AT A CHEROKEE COLD MINE. erals found In this favored territory are tin, gold, Iron ore, silver, lead, monazite, pyrites, limestone, kaolin, fuller’s earth, grantee, marble, and others undiscovered and unlnvesti- gated. Of this number those mined on a large scale are 'tin, gold, mona zite, lime, marble and clay. The largest and most successful tin mine in America is located in Cherokee county, just one mile from the county sea'c, Gaffney. Carload ots of ore are shipped at intervals to England and the mine will be enlarg ed and improved in the near future. In 1893 Cap^. S. S. Ross, who owns a large body of land just outside the corporate limits of Gaffney, discover ed one day in the woods what he thought was 'cin. The piece of ore he picked up looked very much like tin and although he was an experienced mining man himself, he could not be positive and took several samples of ore, carrying it to PMsburg, where a test was made. It was found to be While it has been generally known for a long time that there was much gold in Cherokee, lack of capital has prevented any great strides toward the development of the industry. In the last few months, however, the gold mines of Cherokee have begun to attract attention not only in the South but in the North, where a large number of capitalii&s have be come Interested and* are Investing their money in the gold mines of the county. Gold, Gold, Gold. A number of mining experts sent by Noithern capitalists have been on the scene and from their favorable reports Northern promoters have either paid the county a visit or sent vheir representatives to negotiate with the mine owners. W. Sam Lipscomb, a well known Cherokee planter, has engaged in the mining of gold on a large scale and with up-to-date machinery and a corps of skilled miners, is getting a LIMESTONE KILN "B” AT GAFFNEY. The German-Amerlcan Monazite company and the Carolina Monazite company are both Important factors In monazite mining and cleansing in the county. Besides the cleansing plants these conrerns operate a large number of very successful smaller plums, which are in operation In the northern section of the county. Mona zite has the «ppearance of sand. Its properties are not unlike aluminum Lead and Mica. Lead has been mined successfully in several places In the county. Tin- Cameron mine, situated in the county on Limestone creek, was operated during the exigencies of the War Be- ween the Sections and was a source of supply of lead ore for the Confed erate smelter at Norfolk. This mine is two miles southwest of Gaffney and is the most important of the lead mines in the county, al though '.here are a number of others, smaller and less important, which nevertheless are doubtless very ricli and when developed will be found overflowing with rich lead ore. There are also in this county vas* deposits of the best grade of nrfea. Famous Lime Kilns. The lime kilns of Cherokee at Lime stone Springs have been famous for years. Lime has been manufactured from Vhese quarries for over fifty years and during that time lime that is the product of these quarries has become famous all over vhe South. It is the only lime plant In the State and has a reputation for making the strongest- mortar of any lime in the South, while being recognized as un equal for plastering. The annual capacity of the plant is 85,000 barrels. The demand for the ime taxes the capaciVy of the plant, ifrrels being shipped daily all over the country. Nearly every Southern State draws on these celebrated lime quarries for lime. So celebrated are these kilns that when Cherokee coun ty was created, many wished to name t Limestone. Excellent marbel is found near limestone Springs. A fact not gen erally known is that the block of mar- >le in Washington monument at Washington, D. C„ from South Caro- ina, Is from near Limestone Springs. The marble here is of a superior grade and &eps will be taken in the near future to quarry on a large scale. The granite of Cherokee county is of a very high quality and takes a >eautlful, smooth polish. Steps ;oward widening this industry in the county are also contemplated at an early date. Fine clays are found in the county, and this Is being shipped regularly to Richmond, Va., and other points. For years pottery has been made In a Gowdeysvllle Notes. Gpwdeysvllle, Dec. 29.—The death angel has again visited our commu nity and claimed as ivs victim Mrs. Polly Garner, widow of the late Charlie Garner. Mrs. Garner had Just eaten supper and retired when taken suddenly ill and expired In a short while, Monday night the 21fit Inst. She leaves six daughters and three sons and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her death. Her children are: Messrs. Sam R. and J. J. Garner, of Union county, Mrs. Broom and Mrs. Childers, of Lock hart, Mrs. Sallie White, of Union county, and Mrs. Minnie Vaughan. Mr. Ellison R and Misses Bunie and Amelia Garner, of this plate. The> have our heartfelt sympthy in this thei^ - darkest hour of sorrow. Mrs. Garner was buried a', Mt. Joy, Union county. Rev. .1. C. Lawson conducted tlie fuenral exercises. Misses Sweetie and Lula Garner, of Pinckney, have been visiting their sifter, Mrs. D. R. Hughes, during Christmas. Miss Sunie Mabry and brother, at tended Miss Lula Garner’s birthday dinner at her home Monday. We are almost of the opinion that Christmas has just about turned into a wedding day, for we have never in all our life, heard of so mauy people get ting married In such *a short length of time. The Bible tells us that be fore the end of time 'that everybody will be of one notion, so we think that time must surely be getting near av hand. Mrs. Nancy Griffin is #ery unwell at this writing. She is a very old lady and is getting quite feeble. Mr. George Foster and Miss Jlettie Garner were married at Jonesville Friday the 25th Inst., also Mr. Robert White and Miss Sallie Gamer were married the same day. Mr. James Sanders and Miss Ila Peeler, of Wilkinsville, were happily married Sunday the 27th, by Magis trate J. L. Strain. We wish for all them much Joy. Thank you, Mr. “J. L. Waterloo, Dec. 29.—A rather un usual and at the same time peculiar accident happened here Saturday af ternoon. A negro man was driving to town in a top buggy and from the sparks of his cob pipe the 'cop of the buggy, which was torn _jn places, caught Are. Fanned by a stiff wind, the whole buggy in an Instant was In flames. The negro barely had time to escape himself and to unhitch his mule. Under the circumstances the mule behaved remarkably well. Kleckley died suddenly at the home of her husband In the Pilgrim'sec tion, a few miles from Lexington, yes terday morning. Mrs. Kleckley’s death carries with It a peculiar sad ness, since It has been buft little less than a year since she was a happy bride. Her husband is heartbroken from grief. Mrs. Kleckley was about thirty-five years old and was a daughter of the iate Thomas Gable. She was a wo man of most estimable character.
