Sniiscrilie for Hie Ledger, $1.50 a Year Recent Happenings in and Around the City. Cotton brought 8.90 on the local market yesterday. Contractor Baker and his men are making fine progress on Mr. A. C. Pridmore’s new home. The scarcest article of diet on the local market is eggs. There are few to be had for love or money. Mr. J. D. Jones has sold his prop erty where he now lives corner of Limestone and Jefferies street, to Mr G. M. Phifer. Don't fail to see Last Lynne to morrow at the Star Theatre, matinee and night. It surely is worth your while to see this great play. Miss Rosa Kirby has gone to Boil ing Springs, N. C., where she has ac cepted the position of matron at the Boiling Springs High School. Mr. L. U. Campbell has rented the handsome residence place of Mr. E. H. Gaines, on Victoria avenue, and will soon occupy it with his family. East Lynne will be presented at the Star Theatre by a very strong company both matinee and night to morrow. The matinee will commence at o o'clock. The December meeting of the Daniel Morgan Chapter D. A. R. will be held at the residence of Mrs. A. N. Wood on Wedenesday afternoon, the 9th inst., at 3 o’clock. Mr. Thos. Wilkins has opened a fresh meat market in one of the Spake building on Limestone street. Mr. W. C. Parris late with L. W. Mc- Guinn, has charge of the business. Mr. W. H. Farrell entertained a large party of his little friends at the Hopper boarding house Wednesday evening. There were about twenty guests present and all had a most de-. lightful time. Sherman Johnson, the negro who was arrested Wednesday for selling whiskey, was tried in mayor's court yesterday morning and sentenced to pay a fine of $100 or serve thirty days on the public works. Mr. Fathans Byars, an aged and worthy citizen and gallant Confeder ate soldier, died at his home in the upper part of the county Tuesday and was buried at State Line church Wednesday with Masonic honors. Prof. W. L. Johnson showed us a specimen of some second-growth ap ples, Tuesday, which grew on hifl place in this city. It was of good size, well matured and as sweet in flavor as those of the first crop. A grand D. O. K. K. ceremonial will be "pulled off” in Spartanburg on the 8th inst. Gaffney will doubtless be well represented on that occasion as there are quite a large number of members of Altai Temple in the city. Sherman Johnson, a well known negro of the city, was arrested Wed nesday by the police under the charge of selling whiskey. Some clever de tective work was done in this case and the officers deserve credit for se curing the right man. Sim Bennett, a negro of the Wil- kinsville neighborhood, was arrested Wednesday night by Deputy Sheriff Lockhart under a warrant charging him with selling whiskey. He is in jail awaiting bis preliminary exami nation. There will be preaching at Limestone Springs Baptist church on the 5th of this month, the first Sunday in De cember at 11 o’clock a. m. All mem bers are requested to be present as business of importance will come up for action. The pulpit of the Limestone Bap tist church will be occupied next Sabbath, the 6th, by Rev. T. H. Har rison, one of the leading preachers of the Broad River Association. The Ledger is requested to urge that all members be present on this occasion. Hon. J. C. Otts went to Columbia yesterday to attend the Prohibition Convention which convened in that city last night. The prohibition move ment in the State is assuming large proportions and will be quite a factor in the future elections. Rev. B. W. N. Simms, of Albemarle, N. C., and a brother of Dr. A. M. Simms, of this place, has been called to the care of the Baptist church of Comanche, Texas. He will probably go about January the first. Mr. Simms was a pastor in Texas for some ten years. Mr. W. M. Jones has exchanged his city property on Cherokee avenue with Mr. R. A. Jones for what is known as the Jesse Mabry and Clem Mabry lands in the lower part of Draytonville township and with his family will move there the first of the year. The people of Gaffney, irrespective of denomination, will be delighted to know that Rev. S. B. Harper has been returned to Buford Street Methodist church. Th*' Ledger extends to the members of this church hearty con gratulations upon Mr. Harper's re turn, knowing that the splendid work which he has been doing in our midst will be continued as long as he re mains with us. Mr. L. U. Campbell has begun work again at Flint Hill Gold Mine. He has placed an engine and plumping .machine in and Monday put a num ber of men at work clearing out the old shaft. Mr. G. B. Wright is in charge of the work at present. Mr. Campbell expects to increase his force gradually and thus have a full force at work in the early spring.
