It seemed as though all Manila and
its suburbs had turned out to wish
the vessels godspeed. Not even the
enormous groups that lined the shores
of Sydney harbor and gave our ves
sels so royal a sendoff at the Austra
lian port were more enthusiastic than
the Manila crowds.
Protestants Gather in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia. Nov. 30.—This city
will be the scene this week of one of
the largest religious gatherings ever
held in America. Fr will be the meet
ing of the Federal Council of the
Churches of Christ in America, rep
resenting almost all of the Protestant
denominations. Of the large churches
of the country the only one not rep
resented in the council is the Protes
tant Episcopalian. Twenty-eight lead
ing Protestant churches will send 3G6
delegates to the convention.
Governor Hughes of New’ York, as
one of the thirty-two representatives
of the Baptist church in the council,
will participate in the discussion of
topics bearing upon church federation j
and will address one of the mass
meetings. His theme will be the “Civic
Righteousness.’’
Among the other distinguished lay
delegates to the council will be Gov
ernor Ansel of South Carolina, Gov
ernor Hoch. of Kansas, and Judge
Crosscup, of Chicago.
Newberry Secretary of Navy.
Washington, Dec. 1.—Beginning to
day the navy of the United States has
a new official head. He is Tinman
H. Newberry of Michigan, formerly
assistant secretary of the navy,, who
has acted as secretary since the re
tiring secretary, Victor Metcalf of Cal
ifornia, was incapacitated b> illness.
The home of (he new secretary is
Tuberculosis Convention.
New York, Nov. 30.—The tubercu
losis show of the international tuber
culosis congress, recently held in
Washington, opened here today with
public ceremonies, (Jovernor Hughes
and Mayor McClellan delivering ad
dresses. Both officials dwelt on the
great Importance of the efforts being
made to combat tuberculosis and pre
dicted that the show would prove an
important factor in the international
war that is now being waged on the
dieease.
Bell Ready for Flight.
Halifax. N. S., Nov. 30.—Dr. Alex
ander Graham Bell, the famous in
ventor of the telephone, has complet
ed his experiments at Bras d’Or lake
with his flying machine, the aero
drome, as he names it, and is ready
to make a public trial of the machine
this week. He is confident that it will
surpass the recent, records made by
the Wrights and others.

M:-ddened by Liquor Commits Double
Crime.
Pittsburg, Pa.—Maddened by the ef
fects of liquor, James Hackett, aged
86 years, of this city, in an effort to
exterminate his family yesterday, fa
tally injured his wife and then com
mitted suicide.
Hackett first attacked his 7-year-old
son, James, but the mother stepped
before the frenzied father and receiv
er! the blow from a hatchet that had
been intended for the boy. She fell
to the floor stunned, and while in this
condition the husband obtained a ra
zor and cut her throat. The child In
the meantime had escaped. Hackett
then turned the weapon upon himself
and inflicted a wound which later
proved fatal.
