Cotton sold yesterday for 9.10, and
the planters were more cheerful.
Large crowds are attending the
skating rink and everybody is enjoy
ing this famous sport.
Joseph King’s New York Company
in a grand revival of East Lynne will
appear at the Star Theatre, Saturday
night, December 5th.
Mr. D. A. Jones and family have
moved to the city from Earls, N. C.
Mr. Jones comes to take a position at
the Irene Mills.
The Woman’s Exchange will have
on sale delicious home-made candy
Friday, Saturday and Monday. Home
made bread on Saturday.
The game law went out of commis
sion last Sunday and the nimrods are
to be observed in their search for
elusive game. The sportsmen report
game plentiful.
An increase in orders for lime has
caused the Limestone Springs Lime
Works to start up another one of
their kilns, ‘which had been burned
out for some time.
East Lynne, without exception the
greatest emotional drama ever writ
ten. will shortly receive one of the
most meritorious presentations ever
accorded it in Gaffney by Joseph
King’s company.
Dr. Lee Davis Lodge, of Limestone
College, has been invited to make an
address to the Philathea and Baraca
classes of the Baptist church at
Blacksburg on Sunday night, the 29th
inst. He will probably accept the in
vitation if nothing prevent.
Mayor Ross tried two defendants
Monday morning, charged with sell
ing whiskey in violation of the town
ordinances. One of them, George
Casey, was discharged, while the
other, Morris Byers, was sentenced
to pay a fine of $75 or thirty days
on the public works. Byers paid his
fine.
At the Colored State Fair held in
Columbia last week Cherokee was re
presented by three exhibits. One
was a hand-made shawl, the handi
work of Lillie E. Ellis, and took first
prize in the hand-work department.
Lillie is a respectable young colored
girl who makes her home with Thos.
Gaffney, near this city, and is to be
commended for her attainment.
Mr, D. C. Ross went to Cherokee j
Falls Wednesday to attend a meeting
of the directors of the Cherokee Falls j
Manufacturing Co. This is one of the
best manufacturing concerns in the
South. It is in the capable hands of
Mr. J. C. Plonk and Mr. R. P. Roberts,
two of the most competent mill men,
as well as the finest gentlemen, to be
found In the world. Mr. Ross reports
the affairs of the mill in excellent
shape.
EAST LYNNE.
This Popular Drama at Star Theatre
December 5th.
One reason for the undying popu
larity of East Lynne, the great emo
tional drama which will be presented
at the Star Theatre Saturday night
December 5th, by a splendid company,
is. your interest is at once excited
when Richard Hate is suspected by
the villainous Sir Francis Levison.
Richard’s attorney is Archibald Car
lyle, who has just taken as his bride.
Lady Isabel, the pretty daughter of
an impoverished earl. Isabel’s jeal
ousy is wrought upon by the clande
stine meetings between her husband
and Barbara Hare, Richard’s sister.
These meetings merely have to do
with Richard’s trial, but Lady Isabel,
not knowing this, and being goaded
on by the scheming Sir Francis, who
loves her, consents to an elopement,
Archibald is plunged into despair, but
after a lapse of years, having secured
a divorce, he rewards the unselfish
love of Barbara Hare by making her
his wife.
In the meantime, Lady Isabel’s cup
of misery has been filled to the brim
by S’’r Francis’ refusal to fulfill his
promise of marriage and she leaves
him. Learning of the serious illness
of her child, whom she had deserted
in her unreasoning jealousy, she ap
plies for the position of nurse to the
little sufferer. Disguised as Madame
Vine, she secures the position, but,
overborne with emotion at the dying
agonies of her boy, she throws off her
disguise and reveals herself to him
as .his mother. She is discovered by
Miss Cornev, the quaint spinster sis
ter of Archibald Carlyle, and through
her instrumentality, a reconciliation
is brought about between Archibald
and Isabel before the sorrowing
mother closely follows her boy into
the realms of the unknown.
It will be seen that the character
of Isabel moves through many strong
dramatic and intensely thrilling
scenes and through many strong emo
tional parts, and the actress interpret
ing it is afforded exceptional opportu
nities for the display of her art.
The production will be under, the
masterful stage direction of Mr.
Joseoh King, who has earned an en
viable reputation by his work in stag
ing such well known successes as The
Ninety and Nine. Uncle Dan’l with
Fred Wvckoff: Fast Lvnne with Re
becca Warren; The Wife with Selma
Herman: Toss of the DTTrberville,
Ball and many other notable product
ions.
The Globe Resumes Operations.
The Globe Mill, which has been
shut down for some time, last Mon
day resumed operations. The mill
has been thoroughly overhauled and
electricity will be the motive power
instead of steam. Mr. Lawrence Pot
ter. the newly elected president, ex
pressed the opinion to a Ledger re
presentative that the mill w'as in a
better position than ever before to
make money. This is the smallest
mill in Gaffney but it is up-to-date in
every respect and the class of goods
turned out receives ai ready sale on a
normal market.
WELL HIDDEN, STILL FOUND.
Officers Destroy Moonshine Plant in
North Carolina.
Monday Officers McGaha and Me-
Cravey came to Gaffney from Green
ville and went over into North Caro
lina, where they located a distillery
of about 150 gallons daily capacity,
destroying about 2,000 galons of beer,
which was almost ready to be dis
tilled, and about 20 fermenters. Un
fortunately the still, worm and cap
had been removed before the arrival
of the officers. The plant was locat
ed on a branch on the side of a hill
and the house was built over the still
in such a way that unless one knew
its exact location it would never be
seen. Entrance was effected through
a hole in the side of the hill.
This plant was located not. far from
the Boiling Springs High School. It
had been a source of much trouble to
the authorities of the school, as the
operators thereof would supply the
students with whiskey.

The Silver Offering.
One of the social events of the week
was the silver offering on Tuesday,
evening at the home of Mrs. W. C. i
Carpenter. Quite a number of yuong
ladles from the college came up and
the young folks had a gala time. Miss
Dew and Miss Farr kindly assisted in
the entertainment. Refreshments
were served but there were no charges
only the offering at the door, and the
club ladies netted a neat little sum
which will go towards the library
fund. The program was as follows:
