Okmulgee, Okla.. Nov. 10.—-Eight
persons were killed and ten others
were wounded yesterday in a fight be
tween James Deckard, a negro des
perado, and officers.
The disturbance began at the St.
Louis and San Francisco railroad sta
tion, where Deckard engaged in a fight
with an Indian boy, Steve Grayson,
and beat him into insensibility with a
rock.
Friends of Grayson notified the po
lice and when Policeman Klaber went
to the station, Deckard fled to his
house near by, barricaded himself in,
and when Klaber approached, Deck-
ard shot and instantly killed him.
Sheriff Robinson gathered a posse in
a few minutes and hurried to the
scene. Part of this ifosse was made
up of a group of negroes, whom the
sheriff commissioned as deputies. As
the posse approached the house, Deck
ard opened fire with a rifle, firing as
rapidly as he could load his weapon.
The sheriff fell first, instantly killed.
Then five of the negro deputies were
■lain.
Deckard’s house was soon surround
ed by a frenzied mob of armed men.
Fire was set to a house just north of
Deckard’*. Volleys were poured into
Deckard’s house and he was shot
down. He was seen to roll over on
the floor strike a match and set fire
to his own house, which was soon a
roaring furnace, in which his body
was baked. Deckard evidently had a
large quantity of ammunition storen
In his house, for many cartridges ex
ploded while the house was burning.
Governor Haskell, at Guthrie, was
notified of the battle and of the bad
feeling between whites and negroes
that had grown out of it, and threat

the hotel. The owners, Messrs. Jung

just been consummated for the sale
of the inn property for a consideration
of $135,000, and but for the fire would
have been closed yesterday. There
was but $26,000 insurance on the ho

Aside from the hotel, four cottager
and their contents were destroyed, en
tailing a loss estimated at $16,000.
The Incline power house was badly
damaged and the trestle on the face
of the bluff was ablaze for a consider
able time.
The fire started in the south wing
of the hotel building, but the exact
cause has not yet been ascertained.
The hotel was completed in 1S89 at
a cost, of $150,000, and contained about
four hundred rooms.

were accorded a hearty welcome.
Regarding the future of the demo

"I am not at all discouraged as to

There must be a democratic party in
every country, and I want our party
to be democratic, and I believe no
doubt that the country will see the
necessity for the adoption of reforms
advocated by the democratic party. It
is already a great edcuational force,
and I have no doubt that conditions
will so vindicate the party as to make
the voters turn to it as the best in
strument for the accomplishment ol
the necessary reforms.”
“Will you allow yourself to be elect

"They do not elect a senator this
year,” he said, with a smile.
