, General election returns throughout
the United States, received up to au

showed the following results:
William H. Taft, of Ohio, has been
•looted president with 29b electoral
votes sooure, and thirteen doubtful
states.
Practically no dhange Is indicated
iu the complexion of the national
house of representatives.
The United fftatee senate will return
its present republican majority.
Governor Charles E. Hughes has
been re-elected in iNWw Yosk stato by
about 76,000 plurality.
Indiana has gone for Ta«t by from
15,000 to 18,000 plurality.

lorn* of the figures relating to the
Mpubltcan slump in certain statea,
regarded as certainly republican, are
little short of amazing. Pennsylvania’s
immense plurality of over 500,000 four
years ago, has been cut in two.
Illinois, which gave Roosevelt 306,.
000 In 1904, has gone for Taft by
about 170,000. The highest claim of
the republicans for Indiana Is 15,000,
as against a lurality of 93,000 for
Roosevelt.
Iowa, which gave Mr. Roosevelt
IfiS.OOOO plurality in 190i, has drop
ped down to about 40,000 for Taft.
The return of Missouri to the demo-
eratic column on the presidential
Hoket, wiped out a republican plural

(Maryland and West Virginia are oon.

the generally reduced republican plu

There has been a shrinkage in the
democratic vote in several of the

Sloan’s Liniment is the best remedy for sprains
and bruises.
It quiets the pain at once, and can be applied to the
tenderest part without hurting because it doesn’t need
to be rubbed — all you have to do is to lay it on
lightly. It is a powerful preparation and penetrates
instantly — relieves any inflammation and congestion,
and reduces the swelling.

Young Men’s Clothes
Ederheimer, Stein &, Co., Makers
A LL your pet ideas of how your
Fall overcoat should look find
expression in the new styles we’re
showing. Most Young Men’s clothes
are lacking in either smartness, per
fect fit or right tailoring. These are
correct, in all three respects.
Some of you haven’t worn one of theae long,
soldier-like, button-to-the-neck-coat*. You’ve admired
them on others. You’ll want others to admire them
on you. We’re showing several styles; in rich browns,
olives and other medium and dark shades. The
Ederheimer-Stein name is guarantee of quality.

The indications are democratic gov-
■ ornors have been elected in several of
j tin; middle wstern staies that have
! given tin ir presidential viitos to Taft.
Mr. Taft nas exceeded Mr. Rooso-
yelts plcrality in New Jersey and
Massachusetts, as well as in New
York state..
The republican plurality fell off
heavily in th® middle west, a matter
thoroughly surprising to republicans.
Speaker Cannon has been re-elected
bv his usual majority.
000.
Governor John A. Johnson, of Min
nesota, has probably been elected gov
ernor of that state for a third term,
although the state has gone safely for
Taft.
The voting throughout the country
been exceptionally heavy, ideal
weather conditions bringing out the
country voters in full force.
Mr. Taf! carried practically every
sooalled doubtful state, except Ne
braska, where the indications point
to a democratic victory.
Mr. Bryan has carried Nevada and
Montana in addition to the solid south,
which includes Missouri.
Returns from Colorado and Mary
land are too meager to form a def
inite conclusion as to their ultimate
alignment.

The first returns received wire from
the scattering districts in Massachu
setts. Tho heavy pluralities indicat
ed there for Mr. Taft seemed at once
to dissipate any probability of a land
slide. for Mr. Bryan, a> many demo,
crats had claimed, and the republican
managers at once began to put out
claims of victory.
Returns from the up-country dis
tricts of New York state, where voi

Chairman McKinley Says There’ll B© a
Working Majority.. •
Early Wednesday morning return*
received from 31(5 congressional dis
tricts, out tof 391 in the country. Of
these republicans had 179, the demo
crats 129, 9 were (doubtful, and from
64 districts no accurate returns had
next to arrive. It had been predicted
for .levs that Erie county, including
the heavy vote of Buffalo, might 1
taken as an ;ndt\ to the drift through
out the country. This has prove !
the ense. so far as the national ticket
was concerned, Mr. Taft having a
plurality cf something mor- than four
thousand votes. Erie county, sur
prisingly, however, gave Chanler, a
plurality of more than 3,900.
The opponents of Governor Hughes
were quick to claim a sweeping vic
tory, but returns from the other large
counties and cities soon changed the
complexion of the returns completely.
The vote in Greater New York for
Mr. Chanler was deeply disappointing
to his friends, while the heavy vote foi
Mr. Taft, especially in the borough
of Brooklyn, completely eclipsed the
mo. t sanguine hopes of the republia
aus. Governor Hughes was cut heav
ily up fh# state, but not so deeply a*
republicans party at this hour lack 17
votes of being able to control th*
house. Speaker Cannon has been re
elected.
At 1 o’clock Wednesday morning,
Chairman McKinley, of the republican
congressional commtitee, gave out the
following statement;
“From reports received up to mid
night it would appear that 230 repub
licans and 161 democratic members
of the house, have been chosen, giving
the republicans a majority of 69 in
the sixty-first congress. Later returns
may change this estimate somewhat,
as there sgre several close countests In
which we expect to make republican
gains.’’
Returns u pto date show the elec
tion of sixty-four democrats to oon-
gross and 78 republicans.
Republicans gain a district in the
state of Penn sylvena heretofore held
by democrats. •
