Work of Stamping Out the Fever
Tick from Cattle Bringing Good

Tbe Ledger.—The enclosed letter
from Mr. W. M. Capps, Tigerville, S.
C., was published in the Greenville
Semi-Weekly News. This letter was
unsolicited by this office, and its ap
pearance in this paper gave great as
sistance and satisfaction to us, owing
to the fact that our efforts towards
tick eradication in this section of
Greenville county have met with con
siderable opposition.
We have been trying for several
years to show the inhabitants of this
State the importance of eradicating
the fever tick, but many seem to
think our views too theoretical, and
for this reason we are glad to have
this gentleman come forward and
give his experience, so that the pub
lic might see the results which are
to be obtained figured out in dollars
duel cents.
Mr. Capps, however, does not rea
lise the progress that we have made
in tick eradication work in Green
ville county during the past year. I
have written him an explanatory let
ter, telling him that if he so desires,
he can now place his cattle on the
larger markets w'ithout restrictions,
and thus realize 5 to 10 cents per
mistake and working directly against
| their own good. I know that ticks
can be completely exterminated be-
cause I have seen it done at my old
| home in Henderson county, N. C. f I
| also know that ticks do great harm
I to cattle and at the same time are
likely to cause their death. I urge
the people in this county to fall in
line and make war against ticks un
til the last one is exterminated and
j then we will be rid of the quaran
tine and be able to have a better
market and better cattle.

Attraction at Star Theatro Tomorrow! <>™r everything, that was Mgh-
Night.
“Peacetown,” the production pre
sented by J. Early Hughes at the
Star Theatre in this city on tomor
row night, is said to be one of the
cleverest, brightest hits of AmeRcan
humor before the public today. It
deals with a realistic type of Ameri
can simple life.
The scene is laid, in the little vil
lage of Peacetown, Maine, and has to
do with certain events in the life of
Jossua Spivens, an eccentric type of
American countryman. An interest
ing fact about the play is that the
author, Chas. O. Young, Jr., while on
a hunting trip through the State of
Maine, came purely by accident upon
the little village of Peacetown. There
he became acquainted with a man
whose character was so unique that
he knew a most critical public could
not fail to be interested in the por
trayal of that character on the stage.
Realizing the natural fitness of Mr.
J. Early Hughes for the portrayal of
this fine character, the play'was writ
ten with this end in view.
Peacetown is full of quaint humor
and is drawn very close to lire. The

The guests assembled about 9
o’clock and were met with great
dishes of popcorn, prepared in a
most delicious manner which every
one enjoyed, and this was followed
by fudge—fudge made only as girls
know how to make it. Next, each
young man received a peanut tied
with ribbons of the club colors, and
inside there was a slip of paper with
a girl’s name written in cipher. Af
ter much work and lots of fun the
boys finally secured their partners
and visited a spookey-looklng place
in the hall, where they were served
beer and gingersnaps from a fierce
looking pumpkin head, by Miss
Montez Bramlette and Mr. William
Walker. Each girl then received an

pound, the price which he formerly
received. Our work, which has made
this possible, is briefly outlined be
low. Our inspectors began work in
Ocouee, Pickens, Greenville and An
derson counties on July 1, 1907.
Since that date, a farm to farm in
spection has been made, and the
tick Infested farms have been located
and quarantined, thus preventing
spread of disease carrying ticks to
tick free premises. In these four
counties, over 40,000 cattle have been
inspected (nearly 3,000 more than
shown by auditor’s returns) in Green
ville county alone. About 1,200 in
fested cattle were located and quaran
tined on 275 different premises. The
ticks have been already eradicated
from over 25 per cent, of all the in
fested premises in these four coun
ties and these premises have been
released from quarantine. About 50
per cent of the remainder are nearly
free and will soon be released.
In December, 1907, a report of last
summer’s work was forwarded to the
chief of the Bureau of Animal Indus
try, accompanied by a request from
this office for the placing of these
four counties in provisional federal
quarantine. This request was grant
ed, and an order was published by
the secretary of agriculture on April
1, 1908, permitting shipment of cat
tle from these four counties into any
portion of the United States after
cattle are inspected by an authorized
Inspector, and permission obtained
from the proper official of the State
into which the cattle are to be ship
ped. The federal quarantine against
other portions of this State still ex
ists, and the shipment of cattle from
this area, except for immediate
slaughter, will consequently be pre
vented. This work means a great
deal to the citizens of this State, as
is shown by Mr. Capps’ letter, and
we trust that the owners of quaran
tined cattle in these four counties
will give us their assistance in eradi
cating ticks from their premises, and
thus enable us to place all the coun
