Neglect of Yellow Pine Forests. In many parts of the country the most progressive men of the lumber Industry have felt the greatest necessity of adopting better methods of protecting their timber holdlmgs from fire but In some places there still remains much to be done. This is particularly true through a part of the great yellow pine belt of the South upon which the naval stores industry of the world Is largely de pendent. A timber owner of Florida, in writing to the Forest Service at Washington, talks of the matter as follows: “Speaking of fire protection: There is absolutely nothing being done. The turpentine people, to protect their turpentine timber, rake around the trees during early winter, and then burn the woods. This is dohe to keep off the forest fires of early spring. These fires are supposed to be set by the cattle interest, for the purpose of burning off the dry grass, so that the young grass will come up, on which the cattle feed. In do ing this, they destroy millions of young pines that have Just started to grow and are too small and tender to stand the heat of the fire. "If these fires could be stopped, it would solve the problem of re foresting, as far as Florla Is con cerned. I have thought for a long time that a no fence law would go far toward . stopping the burning of the woods. As it is now, there is bo regulation. “What I mean to say is, that if you own a small piece of land, say 40 acres, and had 10,000 bead of cat tie, you are at liberty to graze your cattle on my 10,000 acres of land, or on my neighbor’s 20.000 acres of land, and we cannot help ourselves. If we would catch you firing the woods and had a witness to prove It, we could prosecute you, but this is hard to do. Marine wood borers, which attack piling and other timber placed in salt water, are causing the engineers In charge of the construction of marine works on the Pacific coast much con cern. They are particularly destrust- ive along the coast from Southern California to Alaska, and shippers are beginning to realize that a cheap preservative treatment for this class of material would secure a big sav ing. The thing that is ne cessary to make the trees healthy and vigorous goes up in smoke every year. “What I have mentioned,, and the many destructive methods being practiced in the cutting of timber in the forest and in the manufacturing of it, is costing the South millions of dollars of which she is taking no account, and the present low prices of lumber and naval stores will add to the destruction, for the reason that many of the owners of timber are being sent all over the world, and in the majority of cases we are not making expenses out of our com modity, with a total loss of our tim ber which is really valuable enough to bring a good, liberal stumpage. We are selling our turpentine at 35 and 36 cents per gallon, and it will cost 31.00 per gallon to reproduce the forest from which it is being taken. The same thing will apply to rosin. A striking example of a seemingly useless waste product of the forest , whicn has developed Into a market- j able commodity of no small import ance, is what is known as pine oil. probably given the best results. It is true that a great many piles treat ed with creosote have been attacked by marine borers and destroyed, but in such cases there is usually a good reason to account for the failure. For instance, the use of timber of such density that the preservative cannot be forced into It, the use of green timber, the lack of sufficient preservative, or the use of a preserva tive of Inferior grade may prevent the treatment from being completely successful. Along the Pacific coast, particular ly in California, large quantities of yellow pine are found. This timber embodies all of the characteristics of a good pile timber, with the one exception of durability. Western yellow pine is open-grained, and lends itself readily to a successful preservative treatment with creosote. Tnere is no good reason, therefore, why this timber should not be nsed to replace Douglas fir wherever the yellow pine can be obtained at a reasonable cost. Details of the work of the forest service along this and similar lines can be obtained on re- que;t from the forester, at Washing ton. Orphan Work-Day. There are 250 orphans at the Thornwell Orphanage, Clinton, S. C., Presbyterian. There are 50 orphans at the Church Home. Charleston, S. C., Episco palian. The Lutheran Church Home is at Salem, Va. The Hebrew Home is at Atlanta, Ga. The Roman Catholic Homes are in Charleston, S. C.
