Jule Watson, who finished the base ball qeason with the Mobile Southern League Club, passed through the city, ■ i4 Wednesday evening en route to hla* home In Greensboro, N. C. This po- 1 pular ball player is well known here, having played with Buffalo against the home club and having the dis tinction of being the only player to knock a ball over the fence at the local park this season. Durbin .Tones Is now occupying the Haker house on Granard street. C. B. Lawrence has moved Into Mrs. A. V. Montgomery’s house on Race street. J. Frank Carson has sprung some thing new at his store. He installed a mammoth clock which is a thorough ly accurate time piece and Its size makes it easily read, even at a dis tance. The dial is painted on the window and th.e hands on the Inside tell the passerby how far Old Sol should have reached. An attractive cord in which some reference is made to “time,” Is changed dally on the hands of the clock. Chief of Police Duncan, of Blacks burg, brought a negro over to the chaingang Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Pridmore are i hoarding with Mrs. J. H. Turner,! having moved there this week. Contractor L. Baker Is placing ma terial on the lot to commence the erection of Mr. A. C. Pridmore’s new residence. Special meeting of the congrega tion of Limestone Baptist church Sunday at 10 o’clock. All members are urged to be present. The many friends of J. Anthony Sarratt, formerly a popular Gaffney boy, now residing in Union, will be glad to know that he has been honor ed by an appointment as second lieu tenant in the United States army. “Tony” is very popular and his good luck will be heard with delight here. The honor is greater on ac count of the fact that Anthony is the only young man from South Carolina in the list of appointments. Eison has moved from Mrs. A. V. Montgomery’s house on Race street across the street to Mrs. Fran ces Montgomery’s house. Over a dozen new students have reached the city to enter Limestone College within the last few days. Al though regular work at the college commenced some days ago, the young ladies continue to come. Harry Wilkins left Tuesday for Charleston where he will teach at Porter’s Mil. ary Academy the com ing session. Harry Is thoroughly equipped for the position and will make an excellent officer In the ac ademy. No applicants appeared at mayor’s court yesterday morning for instruct ions in how to walk the straight and narrow path of good behavior, and an empty court room and a blank docket was all that could be muster ed for the occasion. Announcement is made at the Gaff ney postoffice that Mr. Z. A. Robert son, who has been assistant post master at the local office, has resign ed. Mr. T. H. Littlejohn will suc ceed Mr. Robertson. The change will take place Monday. Judge C. T. Bridges, who presides in his court with all the dignity of a Marshal or a Fuller, issued a rule yesterday against Mrs. Lee Bright to show cause before him why sne; should not be fined for contempt of court for leaving the sacred pre-1 clncts of the forum without permis- ! sion or explanation after she had : been duly summoned to appear and testify in a case which was then and there pending in the court of hia honor. The defendant appearing at the time specified in the rule and showing the honorable court that the remission was due to Ignorance, was excused by the court after a severe reprimand and allowed to go on her way rejoicing. Dr. Malcomb Goudelock left Tues day evening for Baltimore where be will make bis future home. Every body in Gaffney is fond of Malcomb and it is a matter of sincere regret to all that be has seen fit to leave the city. The best wishes of his many friends go with him to his new field. Mr. D. G. Cline and family have moved to Gaffney from Blacksburg, ji They will occupy Mr. Jenkins’ house in West End. Mr. Cline will engage in the wood business. Mr. Cline was formerly engaged in the livery busi ness here and made many friends who will give him a warm welcome. The theatre-going public will hail with delight the good news that our old friend “Uncle Josh Jenkins” is to visit us soon. This company which has made an exceptionally strong impression where it has appeared, has many friends here who will await its coming with interest. The or ganization this years is stronger than ever, all the old favorites being re tained and capable new on§s added. It now ranks with the best dramatic companies touring the country. The play is one of those homely New England dramas, with a beautiful story running through It. Comedy, sensation and pathos abound. Strict attention has been paid to details, and a full new set of scenery has | been painted for this production., Undoubtedly, a big crowd will attend i to welcome “Alvira,” the constable “Zeke,” the Hayseed Band” and “Uncle Josh Himself." No theatrical season is complete without the joys afforded by “Uncle Josh” and hia 1 fellow neighbors. Health Officer Hallman announces that the city will not allow any drove hogs to be kept within the incoporate limits to slaughter. Mr. Hallman says that none of the neighboring cities allow this practice and it is well for Gaffney to follow them in the matter.
