terday. There were no sinners be
fore Mayor Ross yesterday morning.
Cotton sold yesterday for 9c. Wed
nesday’s receipts were more than a
hundred bales and yesterday there
was a good deal on the market.
A Two Year Old Child Crushed by ■
Thousand Pounds and Still Lfvss.
Probably the most remarkable oc
currence on record In this county, or
possibly In the State, occurred Wed
nesday afternoon on the farm of Mr.
Joe Cook, a well known Cherokee
farmer, when a little girl only two
years of age fell beneath the wheels
of a wrfgon and over a thousand
pounds weight passed over her body
and she is still alive, although her
bowels, over which the wagon pass-
j ed, were seemingly mashed to a pulp,
she does not seem to be suffering and
she will recover. In fact she was
out playing yesterday. The case
baffles local physicians who cannot
understand why she was not instant
ly killed. The little one Is the small
daughter of Mr. Cook, and was In the

year. The call was a unanimous one,
thus signifying the esteem in which

Mr. J. M. Leech, of Hickory Grove,
was in the city yesterday prospect
ing. Gaffney would be delighted to
have Mr. and Mrs. Leech make this
place their future home. Mrs. Leech,
who was a Miss Mercer, and is favor
ably remembered here.

at the Gaffney park a short time ago,
suffering a fractured skull and having
a hole made In his head the size of
a man’s hand, but who survived the
experience and is now apparently as
well as ever, Is a brother of this lit
tle girl. Truly in both of these cases
the victims appear to bear charmed | =
lives. Physicians are surprised at
the recovery in both coses, although
in one case it has been demonstrated ;
and in the other it seems likely to be. ^
The last case however Is the more
singular of the two. It being truly
remarkable.

Gov. Ansel Tuesday restored to Attendants from Several Other States
citizenship Riley Phillips, who was
convicted of wife beating in Chero
kee county some years ago, and has
served out his sentence. The peti
tion was presented by a large num
ber of citizens, who stated that since
his. conviction ajid sentence Phillips
had led an upright life.
On last Monday afternoon the
“Question Club” met with Mrs. Char
les Hames for the purpose of reor
ganizing. After a short business
session during which new officers
for the year were elected and plans
for the year’s work made, a dainty
and refreshing luncheon was served.
The next meeting will be held with
Miss Annie Johnson.
Mr. Frank Mabry, of the Corinth
section, was in town yesterday.
Frank is one of those sterling young
farmers that it does a man good to
talk with. He said that he would
hardly make more than a half crop
of cotton this year but he had plenty
of corn, some hogs and cows and was
therefore in fairly good shape. The
hope of the country rests in such
men.
