NOTES AND COMMENTS.
An'one who imagines that South
Carolina will have a nonentity in the

of Hon. E. D. Smith have another

Tne cotton growers of Spartan
burg ounty have fixed 10 cents as
the minimum price at which to sell
cotton, and that is low enough. In
fact it can be raised at a profit at
that price and the mills can afford
to pay that price and make a profit
on their manufactured product. It
seems to us that it would be a gooa
thing for the farmer and the manu
facturer to get together and agree
on making the price of cotton a fix
ed one and then there would be no
unsettled market conditions to deal
with.

One of the latest additions to our
library is a copy of the “Handbook
of South Carolina,” by Mr. E. J. Wat
son. commissioner of agriculture,
commerce and immigration. This
volume contains all the data given
In the 1907 edition, which edition re
ceived much favorable comment, not
a word of which was superfluous, and
In addition statistics on all lines to
date, besides several entirely new
features not given in the 1907 volume.
If Mr. Watson lad never done any
thing else than given South Carolina
tbit* book he has well earned the
paltry sum paid by the State for his
services. The next legislature may
abolish this office. Should it. do so,
however, its membership will show
a la/k of appreciation of a great
work.

White Diamond Lithia Springs,
Sept. 19, 1908.
Yellow, mellow ripened days,
Sheltered in a golden coating;
O'er the dreamy, listless haze,
White and dainty cloudlets floating;
Winking at the blushing trees.
And the somber furrowed fallow,
Smiling at the airy ease
Of the southward flying swallow,
Sweet and smiling are thy ways,
Beauteous, golden autumn days.

Resolutions of Respect.
1 Whereas, it has pleased the
Supreme Architect of the universe in
His wisdom to remove from our
worthy and esteemed brother, W
D. Camp, one of our most loyal mem
bers and a charter member of our
lodge.
Therefore, be it resolved;
First. That this, Buffalo Lodge,
No. 202, A. F. M., deeply deplore the
loss of our worthy brother. In his
death the community has lost an up-
righ f citizen, an honorable gentle
man ’rue to every trust confided to
min
Seiond. That we extend to the
ber< aved kindred of our deceased
brother in this the hour of their grief
and loneliness, our deepest and most
hear*felt sympathy, assuring them
that “the Supreme Architect of the
universe doeth all things for the
good of them who loveth. Him.”
Third. That these resolutions be
spread upon a page in our minute
book dedicated to his memory, and
a copy sent to his family, and also a
copy be sent to the Gaffney Ledger
and *o the Cherokee News for publi
cation.

At this time the writer is station
ed at White Diamond Springs, so
widely known for its virtures in the
water, for recuperation after under
going an operation in the head.
The beauties of nature are gor
geous here; should stimulate avyone
for writing, but somehow It seems to
paralyze my facilities. The tall trees
which cloth the hills are still robed
in garments of green, fresh as If In
mid summer; yet the air is cool and
invigorating; seems to put new life
into our bodies. Though the hotel
has been closed since the first of Sep
tember the place seems to hold some
charms for persons even in it quieti-
tude.
.A party from Hickory Grove and
Smyrna came up on Monday for an
outing day.
Mr. Mart Moore, who was engaged
as salesman at the Hughes place of
business in Blacksburg, came down
to spend a short while on the spring
grounds as he was en route to his
home.
Mrs. M. A. McFarland and child
ren, little Misses Mary, Zola, Annie
Lee and Alma, are spending a fort

Mr. R. L. DeVlnney, of R. D. No. 4,
Yorkville, with little daughter and
son. Ruby and Robert, visited Mrs.
DeVlnney and daughter, Miss Mamie,
who are here for a month’s stay.
Mr. and Mrs. P. T. Sapoch with
their children, Mr. Glenn Sapoch,
Mesdames E. H. Bridges and Madge
Gaines, of Blacksburg, spent Sunday
on the grounds.
Mrs. Preston Thomasson, Miss
Mozelle Thomasson, of Yorkville, R.

ed here Thursday.
Mr. Chas. Clary, the bookkeeper
of the most ardent admirers of Nan
sen were a couple of old men. who
kept shouting and waving their
sticks.
When the celebrated explorer had
passed, immediately following in the
wake of the carriage, came a wagon
drawn by three horses, hearing a
long iron pole, which belonged to the
electric tramways company. Direct
ly the old men saw It, the following;
conversation took place:
“Well, I’ll be Plowed! Sitha, Bill.:
he’s brought the pole back wi’ him!”
said one.
“Ay,” said the other admirer of
Nansen, “and we t’ only two ’at’s
noticed It. They’re all running af
ter t’ carriage, sitha; they’re that
ignorant; well they can’t tell the pole
when they see It!”
Shall try to leave the spring for
others though.
