A COW IN A WELL.
She Fell Twenty Feet and Was Net
Injured.
Yesterday morning about ten o’clock
a cow belonging to Prof. W. L. John
son fell Into an abandoned well on
the premises of Mrs. A. V. Montgom
ery. The well Is about twenty feet
deep and about seven feet square.
The dirt around the bottom had caved
In and when The Ledger man arrived
on the scene the cow was standing on
her feet at the bottom of the well and
appeared as content as If she were
grazing In a meadow. She was, to all
appearance unhurt. The well In ques
tion had not been used for twelve or
thirteen years. It had been covered
over with plank and the plank had
decayed. The cow had been tethered
near by but had broken the halter
and was evidently trying to eat the
leaves off an apple tree near the old
well and had gotten up on the decay
ed covering when It. gave way and she
went to the bottom. Sheriff W. W.
Thomas, Arthur Hopper and Mr. At
kins, the well digger, got busy and
with the assistance of a number of
others erected a block and tackle
and lifted the cow from the deep hole
yesterday afternoon..
