NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Boost Gaffney and watch her grow.
• * •
Come to Gaffney Thursday to the
speaking by the candidates for State
office. It will do you good to near
them.
• • •
Do not neglect the subject of good
roads. There is more food for thought
in this subject than any other. There
aie a hundred arguments in favor of
good roads to one against It.
• * •
The voting contest is not so lively
as it should be. Don’t you want your
R. F. D. carrier to cop the prize? If
you do not then let the thing lay
along, hut if you do it is time to get
busy.
lug that he carried out his program
perfectly, and that the cltlsens of his
town stood by him nobly. He and
the town may have their personal or
political differences, but In the mat
ter of entertaining the South Caro
lina State Press Association they
were In perfect accord.
Gaffney Is a good town, a growing
town of some 7,000 inhabitants and
the people are standing by Ed De-
Camp and the Gaffney Ledger; for
they stand for truth, right, justice
and Gaffney, first, last and all the
time.
The association closed its business
session Friday morning and left on a
special train for an outing in the
mountains, going by way of Marion
to Asheville, then Hendersonville and
Lake Toxaway. A report from some
of those who made this trip say it
was one of the most delightful out
ings ever taken by the association.
At the invitation of Greenville the
association will meet there next year.

The county campaign opened yes
terday at Timber Ridge, where the
first speeches were made. All the
candidates acquitted themselves well.
It Is essential that the people of Cher
okee select the very best people who
offer themselves for office. In order
to do this it is necessary for the peo
ple to go out and hear the candidates.
We trust all the county meetings will
be attended and each aspirant wll
be given respectful attention.
Meeting of Newspaper Men at Gaffney.
(Charlotte Observer.)
The South Carolina Press Associa
tion is composed of a most agreeable
body of gentlemen and Its meeting
now in progress at Gaffney is an ideal
one. The people of the city are ex
pressing their hospitality whole-heart
edly and with unanimity. The ses
sions are being held and the guests
quartered at Limestone College, just
outside the town, in the summer va
cation, and the liberties of the place
are being graciously extended by its
able and accomplished president, Dr.
Lee Davis Lodge, who extended a
most handsome address of welcome.
Mr. E. H. Aull, of The Newberry
News-Herald, the president of the as
sociation, is in charge, with Mr. Ed.
DeCamp, of The Gaffney Ledger, as
sisting as director general, with
every man and woman of Gaffney at
his back.
Yesterday’s event was an excursion
Gaston Shoals on Broad river,
where an electrical development of
ten-thousand horse-power has just
been completed. This work is in
charge of Mr. Oscar Shanks, who was
the particular host of the occasion,
and under whose direction the visit
ors, carried on a special train, were
shown the power-house, dam and
grounds and were entertained at
luncheon afterwards. The guests,
many of whom were ladies, must have
numbered two hundred. Nothing
which could have made the pleasure
of the day complete was lacking and
afterwards Mr. Shanks was made the
unwilling victim of resolutions of
hanks and be forced to say some
words of acknowledgement. The
company making this development,
most of the product of which has been
sold, is a Pittsburg organization, while
Mr. Shanks, the manager, is a Ken
tuckian, a native of Breathitt coun
ty, it Is said.
Last night addresses were deliver
ed by Third Assistant Postmaster
General A. R. Lawshee and Mr. R. H.
Edmonds, editor of The Manufactur
ers' Record.
This is not Intended for a report
but only a passing reference and an
acknowledgment of manifold court
esies and the pleasure felt in renew
ing old vows and the formation of
new friendship. As for Gaffney, alert,
attractive and prosperous, it is cover
ing itself with glory in its spirit of
entertainment

It
The Goucher Picnic,
was my pleasure to be present
The Press Association.
It is not often that this editor
makes a trip and comes back to gush
over it, but the trip last week to Gaff
ney, S. C., is one requiring mention
It being the occasion of the annual
meeting of the State Press Associa
tion.
The largest gathering of editors in
the history of the association was
this meeting, which was held In
Limestone College.
The program of the association was
an exceptionally well arranged one
and the addresses by Miss Mary T
Nance and Messrs. A. T. Lawshe
Third Assistant Postmaster Genera
of Washington, D. C., and R. H. Ed
monds, editor of the Manufacturers’
Record, of Baltimore, Md., were all
that could be desired, and the asso
ciation was very fortunate in secur
ing these speakers.
The association was the guest of
the city, and the citizens of that hurt
ling, bustling, thriving place did all
that lay wlBiin their power to make
the sojourn in their midst a pleasant
one. It was a pleasure to “Lodge ’
there and when it became time to
"DeCamp” there was an expression
of genuine sorrow.
The excursion about the city, to the
public buildings, to the mills, to their
various manufactories, the picnic at
the Gaston Shoals Power Co.’s plant
on Broad river—everything they did
—was for the instruction, benefit,
pleasure and amusement of the asso
ciation end there was no hitch In ary
part of the program of entertainment.
"The Old Man of The Ledger,” who
arranged and planned the entertain
ment for his friends and Gaffney’s
guests, has the satisfaction of know-
at the picnic at Goucher on Saturday,
the 25th lust. I have been at many
picnics, but this one far exceeded
any I have ever attended. The ex
cellent dinner was spread in the
grove under the shade of the trees.
The manner in which it was manag
ed showed that the Goucher people
know how to do things right. Ropes
were stretched all around the table
and young men and young ladies
handed the good things over the rope
to content the inner man. Twelve
1 askets full were left over; enough
for supper. The good order of the
young people, especially the boys,
was noticeable. I didn’t see a boy
smoking a cigarette before nor afler
Roys, I hope I may never see yo”. with
a cigarette In your mouth. I wish
I had the pen of a ready writer to
portray to you the evil of it; what
scientific men say about it.
But lo and behold, I did see an old
foggy with a pipe In his mouth puffllng
away. I tell you, if you will smoke,
smoke the pipe, hut I say unto you,
don’t smoke at all.
Now for the speaking, there were
several talks made. Rev. Guy, Mr.
Wiliams, Hon. R. C. Sarratt, Hon. J.
C. Otts, Prof. Hall and the best was
kept for the last. Dr. Lee Davis
Lodge, and all the addresses' were
good.
Hurrah for Goucher. It should have
a picnic every year and let tlu- peo
ple come together and be social. It
Is the good part of life with society.
Life Is a failure, yes, it is miserable.
