July A Pcpualr Gaffney Couple Surprise Their Friends. Monday evening news reached Gaff ney that Mr. George Jefferies and Miss Della Camp had driven over to Blacksburg and were united in wed lock by Rev. G. P. Hamrick, pastor oi the Cherokee Avenue Baptist church, of this city. For some time it has been rumored that something like this was liable to occur at any time and the movement of the couple note out this prediction. Mr. and Mrs. Jefferies, it is said, went to Piedmont I Springs to spend their honeymoon. It was expected they would reach Gaffney yesterday afternoon. George Jefferies is the manager of j the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co., of this j city. He is a splendid young fellow, | a good business man and has scores ! of friends in Gaffney and throughout ! Cherokee county. Miss Camp belongs to one of the i oldest families in the county, and of her it tan truthfully be said that she is a strikingly handsome woman. For several years she has been the assis tant of her grandfather in the audi tor's office, and in this position has i come in contact with a large portion of 'the people of the county, all of whom she has won as her friends and admirers because of her gentle , disposition. The Ledger joins in extending con gratulations and wishes for Mr. and Mrs. Jefferies only the best things of life. OFF FOR THE PHILIPPINES. Mr. John R. Jefferies Receives Civil Service Appointment. John R. Jefferies started yesterday for San Francisco enroute to the Phillippine Island, where he has been appointed by the United States gov- I ernment. It will be remembered that i Mr. Jefferies stood the Civil Service | examination in Columbia last winter, making a very high mark. He will j teach in the Phillippine Civil Service. 5 He will remain in the Island for three years. He expects to sail from San Francisco August 1st. It will take about 35 days to make the voyage as he will go by way of Honolulu and Hong Kong, China. It might be of note to state that he had endeav ired to get the railroad authorities to stop train No. 37 for him, as he had purchased a through I ticket from Gaffney to San Francisco, but as no effort was made to do this, Mr Jefferies was put to much extra worry and inconvenience, besides having to go to Spartanburg to wait, there for three hours in order to get on the through train. The stopping of this train is permitted by the rail road authorities and should have been ;stopped. Miss Cora Wilkins entertained a number of her friends on Tuesday evening at a "Porch Party,” in honor of her brother, Harry Wilkins, who has just graduated at the Citadel and is at home on a vacation. Japanese lanterns added much to the beauty of the porch. Cards containing names of States and their corresponding ; capitals were passed to each guest by little Misses Lucile Darwin and Lo- rene Wilkins, the object being mat i the young men should find the capi tals. which created a good deal of fun. Refreshments were served during tne evening by Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Jones and Mrs. Frank Carson. In a slow, listless, uninteresting and unexciting game Tuesday after noon, the Indians scalped the lads from Bessemer by the score of 6 to 5. At no time during the game was there any chance for Bessemer. Bes semer distinguished themselves by their hitting. Rhyne played a good game for the visitors. Summary: Struck out by Wood, 5; base on balls, Wood 1; struck out by Lindsay, 3; base on balls, off, Lind say 2; attendance, 400; time, one hour and fifty minutes, umpire, Humphries. Second Game. In a game played under many dis advantages, Bessemer City defeated Gaffney Wednesday afternoon to the tune of 4 to 2. Little flung fof Gaff ney and did it in fine style, striking out nine men. The BefiSemer bunch played ball from the first Inning. T^ey are by far the hardest hitting bunch that ever came to Gaffney. Summary: Struck out by Little, 9; by Honeycutt, 5; time, 2 hours; at tendance, 200; umpire, Brown. First Baptist Chuch Notes. Mr. N. B. Broughton, of Raleigh, N. C., will speak at the First Baptist church Sunday morning on some fea ture of Sunday school work.
