The many friends of Prof. John R. Jefferies will be pleased to know that he has been appointed as teacher in the Phillipine Islands for a term of two years as the result of a civil ser vice examination stood January 27th. Prof. Jefferies leaves San Francisco August 1st. Mr. Jefferies was graduat ed from the South Carolina Univer sity in lf*o€ and was principal of the graded school at Denmark the past\ year. Quite a large audience greeted tEe pastor of Buford Street M. E. church at both morning and evening services Sunday. The morning services were mostly devoted to remarks especially suited to communion day. At night there was a most forceful sermon cm | “Christ—the Power—the Example.'’ In the morning Mr. and Mrs. Hames charmed with a duet by Wolcott ! “Not Far From The Gave" and at night Miss Louise John SCI; very nice- lly sang a sdlo “Must Jesus Bear the | Cross Alone?’’ both followed by; ! chorus. Miss Nance Delivered a Most Inter esting Address. After being introduced by Prof. F. , E. Shuford. one of the finest address es to which the patrons and friends of Cherokee Avenue school have ever had the pleasure of listening, was de livered on last Tuesday evening by Miss Mary T. Nance, presiden' of the School Improvement Association ot South Carolina. From the moment she began her address till the close, the great au dience gathered in the spacious audi torium of the new beuilding. was held in breathless attention. While it is impossible to do justice to any address by condensing it, to c ondense Miss Nance's address would give but the faintest idea. Among the many important facts emphasized by her was the duty of the true teacher. She spoke of her, influence upon the pupil and upon the community in which she labored as a teacher. • She spoke of the oneness of work of teacher and parents, and the hearty •co-operation and sympathy that should exist between them. She called at tention to one almost forgotten fact that teachers, as well as other peo- people, really have hearts that need sympathy, feelings that can he crush ed and bodies that grow tired. Miss Nance expressed her faith in the fact that the work of a true teach er will never prove a failure. With expression full of inspiration she spoke of her confidence in the boys and girls in the mills and on the, farms. She emphasized that kind of education that makes a perfect man —that kind of an education that dig nifies honest labor of what kind it may be. that education that elevates boys and ttirls to ’heir proper sphere in life. Many touching appeals wore made to the boys and eirls to eet an edu cation. even though at a sacrifice. These appeals were made all tbe more forceful by oft#n refering to her own personal experience among the country boys of South Carolina. In speaking of school environments,'• she noted the fact that in point of at tractiveness, the school house and grounds should he equal to the best home in the community in which the school is located. Ghlldren in going from attractive homes should spend their study hours in like conditions. Miss Nance closed her address by appealing to patrons to s'and by the teachers, the school and its every In terest. thereby making the school the pride of every community. The Gaffney brass band furnished some very excellent music for the oc casion followed by the string band. Miss Nance’s address will long be remembered by the people of Gaffney who were fartunate enough to hear her. Last Thursday the stockholders of the Farmers Oil Mill met and bought two and a half acres of ground be longing to J. L. Walker and situated in the northern part of the city not far from the sub-siatiofi of the electric company. This will mean much for this part of the city. They also elected a permanent set of officers. Robt. C. Sarratt being chosen president, secretary and treas urer. The following constitute the board of directors; T G. McCraw. J. L. Walker. T. M. Wilkins. T Clary and T. W. Little. This is one of the results of having the Electrical Power Company situat ed near our town and wull mean much towards fhe upbuilding of this parti cular community.
