4une Term Convened Yesterday
Morning.
The June term of the court of
general sessions for Cherokee county
convened at 10 o’clock yesterday
with Judge Hydrlck on the bench and
Solicitor Sease at his post. Steno
grapher Motte having resigned his
position gince the last term of court,
Mr. C. H. Glaze, of Orangeburg, ste
nographer of the first circuit, was
present to take the twtiniony.
Judge Hy dr lob's charge to the
grand jury wag one of the most com
prehensive and logical which has ever
been delivered in this court. It was
replete with common sense and
reason and no juror who is possessed
of a modicum common sense, could
fail to thoroughly understand his du
ties. This is Judge Hydrick’s first
term to preside in this county and he
has made a splendid impression, the
people feeling that he is just and
thoroughly competent to fill his ex
alted position.
R. G. Kuhne took the oath of alle
giance to the United States and was
duly declared a citizen thereof. Mr.
Kuhne was formerly a subject of the
German Empire.
W. S- G. Hinson, alias Grant Hin
son. a young white man. entered a
plea of guilty of car-breaking and lar
ceny and was sentenced to three
months on tEe public works of the
county.
Janies Albert Black, colored, en
tered a plea of guilty of housebreak
ing and larceny and was sentenced
to work on the public works of the
county for one year. This negro was
working for Mr. C. T. Jolly, and one
day when the family was away, he
entered the dwelling and stole there
from a suit of clothes and a razor.
Jim Wilkins, colored, plead guilty
of assault and battery of a high and
aggravated nature and was sentenced
to three months on the public works.
Reese McGill and Frank Shay en
tered pleas of guilty of disturbing re
ligious worship and were sentenced
each to pay fines of $25 or to serve
thirty days on the public works.
It is worthy of mention that of the
five defendants who enered pleas of
guilty and were sentenced yesterday,
two were from North Carolina, two
from York county and one from Spar
tanburg.

Base Ball Today.
i Thera will be a good game of base
: ball at the park today. The herd of
Bisons from Cowpens will lock
horns with the Indians for what prom
ises to be an exciting struggle. The
Bisons are determined to gore the
Gaffney Indians while the Indians are
equally anxious to take a scalp from
them. The game promises to be ex-
I citing from start to finish. Smith, the
1 University of South Carolina pitcher,
will twirl for the visitors while Wood,
the Clemson College lad, will work on
the slab for Gaffney. The Gaffney
fans are standing solidly behind the
home club now as base ball has the
entire town in its grasp. The Gaff-
ney club is in good shape now and
Cowpens will have to hurry to take
the contest back to their historic
stamping ground.
The Mayor’s Matinee.
The curtain was rung up on time
yesterday morning with three actors
doing a song and dance. They were
made up 0. K. in their burnt oork
make-up and were making a noise
like shuffling the pasteboards on the
Sabbath or in other words gambling
on Sunday. Mayor Roag has a motto:
“Those who dance must pay the
piper,’’ so he said “Five or ten.”

11^Wliy is it that the average man is worth so much less in inon^y
and property than we have a right to expect him
to be? It isn’t because he doesn’t make the ^
money, for the average man is industrious and
\ has earned from $10,000 to $30,000 in the past
ten years. It is because he doesn’t give much>
serious thought either to his income or his outgo.
Serious thought would teach him the true value
of a dollar; then he would spend carefully and
save steadily. That system soon places any man
ahead of his fellows.
