It is to be hoped that all the ladies •who are In any way connected with the Knights of Pythias will attend the picnic at Irene Park Tuesday. It would be an everlasting shame if the Blacksburg people should come over here upon our invitation and only have a few ladies to meet and enjoy the day with them. Take a day off, ladies, and attend the picnic. In addi tion to conferring pleasure upon others it will do you good. • • • We call attention to an advertise ment ot Littleton College and Central Academy which will be found in this issue of The Ledger. Littleton Col lege has had during the past year a patronage of 2811 pupils. 258 of whom were boarding pupils. Central Aca demy is a very successful school of .great promise and is one of the kind so much needed in every State in the Union. We know of no educational work ftwt is more desirable than this kind. of the Best Games Ever Seen On the Home Ground. The game of ball between Blacks burg and Gaffney Tuesday afternoon was a very good exhibition of the na tional game. Barring two errors on each side, which cost both teams runs, it was a splendid game. Gaff ney lost the game in the first inning by Wood’s failure to handle a pop fly, and then won it in the eighth by Blalock’s failure to hold a ball throw’n at first, after which hits by Curry and Harris clinched the game for the locals. Wood pitched good ball, as did also Ross. The feature of the game was Harris’ pretty two base hit to center. Lipscomb and Bird were both on the job of catching.' Bell’s work at first for the locals was of the gilt edge variety. Maxwell, Hauser and Ward did good Infield work for Blacksburg, while Curry, Harris and Little did good work for the locals. Blacksburg has a splendid team. They play together and the loss of Wednesday’s game was due to hard luck. In addition to being good ball plays they are a clever set of young gentlemen. We are always glad to have them come over and we won’t mind it if they take a game or two from our boys so long as the latter play ball like they did on Tuesday. The following is the box score: GAFFNEY. A Surprise party. On Tuesday afternoon there was a genuine surprise party at the Baptist pastrium. Few things do more to gladden our live> than the unexpected kindness of true friendship. It is like an unex- pected .'bower that falls in the night —it? coming not heralded—but leav ir.g a refreshed nature and a pure and sweet atmosphere. The church sent up a handsome book case as a gift to their pastor. The ladies, hearing of this, made up theit minds that Mrs. Simms should ai.-o have something for her depart- m.-nt so they gathered all manner of good things to eat and sent up a dray load to the house. Dr. and Mrs. gimme were both away from home, but the lauies took charge of tin- house and soon had things in a stir around that usually quiet home. The Doctor and his wife came in and were greatly moved by the kindness o; their friends—for pt-upi outside of th< membership joined in as they heard of the movement. ‘ The hector says he haf never had anything that touched him more genuinely than this kindness of his peopb- and his friends. All assembled in the dining room where the supplies were piled and. after a prayer for his people, the Dr. and Mrs. Simms and the callers had a good time socially. To all their friends and people the Doctor and his wife wish to express thei r appreciation of their loving kind ness. That the Fourth of July celebra tion at Limestone Springs will be the best we have had for several years, is an assured fact. Most all arrangements have been made for several prominent speakers, and everything has been made ready for the races afid other games. Dr. R. F. Bell, of Blacksburg, was iu the city Wednesday. Major John F. Jones was among the Blacksburg contingent ove-,- to witness the game of ball Tuesday. Banker Morrow, of Blacksburg, was over to see us Tuesday. He enjoyed the game up until the eighth inning. Mrs. Ed Eison was called to Spar tanburg last Sunday on account of pole, and several other contests, both tlie |jj nesg ot - her s j g t e r. Mrs. LeMond. amusing and requiring skill. Besides the contests, .there will be two ball games, one in the forenoon and one in the afternoon. The re port has been started that these games would take place at the new ball park, but this is a mistake, as both games will be played at Lime stone. The ground will be put in good condition and everything will be in first-class shape by the time the crowds begin to gather. Several privileges have been spok en for and the indications all point to this being the best celebration that we have had for some time. Lay aside your work and come to Gaffney and help to make this a general day of enjoyment. Derbin Littlejohn returned to the ; city Monday evening after spending 1 a few days in Spartanburg. J. C. Otts was a visitor to the Spar tan city last Monday. Jones J. Darby has gone to Ashe ville to attend a meeting of the Shriners. Derbin Jones went to Spartanburg last Monday. It was a game chock full of good steady play ing by both teams, a battle between two splendid pitchers, with gilt-edge support on both sides, barring an er ror here and there that added zest to the contest. In the first inning Blacks burg scored a run, after which no man crossed the pan until the last half of the ninth. Only twice did Gaffney get a man as far as third. Blacksburg's steady work kept the home team rimless and almost hit- les? until the ninth. In this inning Death of Mrs. Thomas. Mrs. Emily Thomas, wife of Mr. W. D. Thomas, died at her home on Victoria avenue yesterday afternoon about six o’clock, after a lingering illness. Mrs. Thomas was suffering from that dreaful disease, con sumption. and while her death was expected, it is none the less a sad one. She leaves a husband and six children to mourn their loss. She wag about thirty-six years of age, and a consistent member of the First Bap tist church.
