cles and Personal Notes.
Wilkinsvillp, May 1.—Mr. John A.
M. Butt's had the misfortune to lose
a fine mare yesterday.
There was a big frost this morn
ing.
Misses Wilma and Estelle Mc
Daniel, who have been spending a
few days <*n this side of the river, re
turned to their home at Hickory
Grove yesterday.
Mrs. It. A. Foster, of Hickory
j Grove, made a short visit to her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Estes, yes
terday. Mrs. Estes has been in
feeble health for a long time. She
is one of our county’s most excellent
ladies and one of your correspond
ent’s nearest and best neighbors and
frieds.
Mrs. J. H- Fowler and family at
tended the funeral of her sister, Mrs.
Louis names, who was hurried at Mt.
Joy yesterday. She had been sick a
long time.
The roaring of the storm that pass
ed over this section last Saturday
morning w’as heard for miles on
either side of its track. Aside from
the terror it spreads over a communi
ty the tornado is a sublime scene
showing the presence and power of
the great Jehovah who rides upon the
cloud and directs the storm. Men
and women will stand aghast at it
who are moved by no other demon
stration of divine power. We were
just in the edge of the storm and felt
only a small part of its force—and
that was terrific enough for us.
We met J. C. Chambers, Esq., at
Hickory Grove last Sabbath. We
were sorry to see him using crutches.
He has had a fall from which he re
ceived injuries necessitating their
use. Mr. Chambers graduated with
the first honor at Davidson College
before the war. He was a member
of Company A. 12th S. 0. regiment
and was shot through the body, the
ball passing through his lungs, at
Gaines’ Mill. June 27, 1802, from
which ho has never fully recovered.
It. is said that the surgeons drew a
silk handkerchief through the wound.
The Farmers i'nion (local) met at
the school house last Saturday eve
ning and transacted routine business
connected with the union. They are
resolved to take tin* financial situat
ion as philosophically as possible—
things that can’t be cured must be
endured. This by no means signifies
that they are getting ready to sur
render what they stand for.' In the
construction of man’s body the divine
architect has wisely guarded against
two things—allowing him to pat him
self on the back or kick himself—
one or the other of which he would
be constantely doing if so allowed.
From The Southern Presbyterian
we learn that at a meeting of King's
Mountain Presbytery (X. C.) held at
King’s Mountain April 10, Rev. T. F.
Boozer was dismissed to the Presby
tery of Enoree, Synod of South Caro
lina.
To show how people of Richmond,
Va., do who have the Master’s work
at heart, we clip the following from
the Southern Presbyterian of April
23rd:
“First church, Richmond, of which
Dr. McFaden is pastor, shows by its
annual reports to presbytery one of
the best years in its history. The to
tal contributions were $17,330, or an
average of $37.07 per member. Of
this amount, $7,292 were contirbuted
to the benevolent causes of the
church, or an average of $15.85 per
member. The average contribution
per member for foreign, missions was
$3.17, and for home mission, $4.70.’’
Such a report a K this calls to mind
what a certain Presbyterian preacher
told on himself. On one occasion
when the hat was coming round tak
ing up a collection he found himself
feeling in his pocket for a nickle to
throw in. All at once the thought
struck him; This is my mean, stingy
old self colluding with satan to rob
God of His own. and with that he
pulled out all the money he had in his
l>ocket and threw it in the hat. What
s a noble spirit that was! How many
of our readers have had the same ex
perience
Farnie.s are very busy planting.
Most of the cotton seed is in the
grownd. The corn planting is pro-
i grossing nicely.
Oats are looking fine. Very little
wheat was sown last fall and winter
on account of the almost continuous
rain during the sowing season.
The fruit crop (except cherries)
®e piomlses to be plentiful this year.
Mr and Mrs. W. G. Fowler and
Misg Bonnie McCluney went to Gaff-
Bey last Tuesday.
Miss “Edna.” you are throwing off
on “Mr. Jack." Some girl would do
well to catch him in her net, if we
are any judge.
Messrs. W. A. and 0. W, Wflilso-
nant were called to Blacksburg last
( Tuesday to see their mother. Mrs.
j Betsy Whitesides, who is lying very
low. She is well advanced in years
\ and her recovery is very doubtful.
The Cherojree county candidates
art slow coming out this year. Per
haps they are waiting until the dang
er of killing frost is past—-a good
idea.
There are two thlngty>e°Ple should
1 never do—Complaint of things they
can help, or complain of things they
can’t help. If they can help them
they ought to do so and not allow
them to take place. If they can’t
help them put them down as inevit
able and say no more about it. But
unfortunately most people do hpth.
We forgot to announce In our Tues
day’s letter that Rev. C. M. Teal
would preach at Abingdon Creek
next Sabbath—May 3rd.
The A. R. Presbyterians have built
a new up-to-date house of worship at
Smyrna which will be dedicated on
the third Sabbath in July. Rev. J. P.
Knox, of Columbia, is expected to
preach the dedicating sermon. In
i connection with this a few days meet
ing will be held. We hope to be able
to attend this meeting and be once
more on this, our old stamping
ground.
Mrs. S. F. Estes has a fine brood
of young chickens hatched off and
more hens setting.
With each issue of The Ledger the
correspondent’s letters become more
and more interesting, and great im
provement in each of the writers is
very apparent. We congratulate
each and every one of them on the
success they a;e making in journal
ism. Keep it up young friends,
there’s always room at the top of the
ladder.
We notice that the type setter still
persists in misquoting some of our
v ords. But it’s our fault and not
yeurs, Will. We should take more
pains in writing. Wie commend you
i for doing as well as you do. You are
said to be the only man in the of|ce
than can read our “script.”
Now as money matters are so close
that spinners can't pay over ten cents
for cotton, the cotton holders can re
lieve the situations somewhat by
keeping their produce off the market
! until the mills can dispose of their
goods, and then things will move on
I glibly as ever. Wle think so at least.
L Mr. R. M. Plaxico, of King’s Greek,

seriously wounded today by Constable
Ernest Jones, of Trent township, this

food at the home of Mr. WL W. Jones
and being refused became abusive.
Mrs. Jones then sent for her husband,
who soon appeared in the yard. The

shots at Mr. Jones without effect.
Constable Ernest Jones, a brother of
Mr. W. W. Jones, then appeared arm
