Mr. J. T. Brown has treated his
house on Montgomery street to an ap
plication of paint which greatly im
proves its appearance.
G. B. Daniel and Wl D. Kirby went
to Cedar Springs Saturday and or
ganized a camp of the W. O. W. Kir
in- made a big Woodman speech.

The 4ederal grand jury at Green
ville last week returned “No bill” in
the case of Jonah Hopper charged
with selling whiskey. The above was
the only case sent up from Cherokee
count/.
The James Adams shows pitched
their tent on the depot lot for a
week’s engagement and gave their
first performance last night. The
press notices of this attraction are
very favorable.

Rev. W. T. Thompson preached the
funeral of Mr. J. G. McSwain at Shi
loh church Sunday. The deceased
was a son of Mr. Elijah McSwain and
a member of Shiloh church. He was
also a member of the W. O. W.
The Austell mill, just west of the
city, is in daily operation. Mr. W. B.
Hiil is the miller in charge and he is
capable, efficient and obliging, the
consequence being that the mill has
a large clientele of pleased patrons.
The two-weeks-old infant of Mr. and
Mrs. Coley Horn, who live three miles
east of the city, died Sunday and was
buried at Corinth yesterday. Mr. and
Mrs. Horn have the sympathy of
their neighbors and friends in their
loss.
Rev. George R. Ratchford. of tne
Presbyterian church, will conduct
prayer-meeting at the Buford Street
Methodist church Wednesday evening
at 8 o'clock during the absence from
the city of Rev. S. B. Harper, the
pastor.
Col. T. B. Butler has been invited
by the Salem Memorial Association
to deliver the annual address before
that body on Saturday, May 2nd at
2 o’clock p. m. It is needless to say
that the people who attend will hear
i>. splendid arid;ess.
Rev. T. B. Owens preached at As-
bnry Sunday, his subject being
“Church Attendance.” it was a most
practical sermon, full of wisdom and
not without humor. A large congre
gation was preset,, and thoroughly
enjoyed the services.
The many friends of Barnet S. Lip
scomb, will regret to hear that he Is
lying critically ill at his father's
home in this city. At this writing
there is little hope of his recovery.
Dr. C. T. Lipscomb came to Gaffney
yesterday on account of Barnet’s ill
ness.

the latest style and most approved
desks and provided with the best and
safest heating plants and now Gaff
ney has two of the nicest school
buildings to be found in the State.
The town council has heretofore
been very lenient toward persops
who desired to graze their cows on
the streets. This privilege having
been abused, however, the council
has instructed the police officers to
take up any and all cows found on
the streets whether tied or not. The
public will take due notice and be
governed accordingly.
Rev. W. T. Thompson has just re
turned from the Hoodtown neighbor
hood where he says there was a
severe storm Saturday morning, there
being several outbuildings unroofed
on Mr. E. McSwain’s place, Mr. F. M.
Pruett’s place and a negro cabin on
Mr. Press McBee's place. Mr. Thomp
son says that the storm was one of
the most severe that has visited that
section for years, and that the fruit
trees were badly damaged, and at
some places the timber was blown
down.
There is a certain household in
Gaffney where the lady keeps her hus
band under her thumb. In other
words she does the bossing. Yester
day morning while they were at
breakfast, the lady transfixing her
husband with an icy glare, said:
“There is one thing that, just has to
be done, p have waited patiently long
enough, and I don't intend to put up
with It any longer.” The poor fel
low was sitting there trembling in his
boots expecting to be charged with
seme heinous crime. Imagine his re
lief when she concluded with “You
have just got to make me a chicken
coop.’’

Union of a Popular Young Cherokee
Couple.
At the home of the bride’s parents
at Asbury, this county, Sunday morn
ing at 10 o'clock, the marriage of
Miss Bessie Irene Baines to Mr.
Clarence Tudor Chalk, was solemized
in the presence of a number of the
relatives and friends of the contract
ing parties. The ceremony was pro
nounced by Rev. T. B. Owens, of the
Methodist church. The attendants
were Mr. Floyd Goforth and Miss
Mary Chalk. Mr. William Proctor and
Mass Minnie Baines.
The bride is the youngest daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Baines. She
is a beautiful brunette and a young
lady of most amiable qualities.
Mr. Chalk is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. T. G. Chalk, of Ravenna. He is
the energetic ami gifted correspond
ent of The Ledger at Ravenna and a
young gffntleman ot excellent quali
ties and bright prospects.
Mr. ami Mrs. Chalk start out upon
life's sea under the most favorable
circumstances. They will reside in
the Ravenna neighborhood, where
Mr. Chalk- will engage in agricultural
pursuits. The Ledger joins in extend

Mr. F. E. McClain, of Gastonia, N.
C„ who is traveling in the interest
of a Philadelphia house, came to Gaff
ney Thursday and placed an adver
tisement in Friday’s paper which was
printed Thursday afternoon, with the
result that on Friday morning early
the applications far exceeded the
number of men whom he desired to

Mayor Henry Ross and Ed. H. De-
Camp have rented the plat of land
owned by Mr. Chris Phillips near
North Limestone street and will fix
up a baseball park. They expect to
fence it in and erect a commodious
grand stand for the patrons of the
national game.
We were in error last week when
wo stated that Sam Clary's colt had
died. The best proof of this is that
the colt is still alive and kicking.
The animal was choked, however,
but as soon as C. H. Robbins, Gaff
ney’s well known veterinary surgeon,
arrived on the scene, the colt was re
lived, and so was Sam.
The Cherokee Avenue school has
moved into its new building and the
new addition to the Central school is
now being occupied. * The auditourim
Civil Suit in Magistrates Court.
Magistrate Camp was engaged Fri
day in hearing the case of E. T. Wil
kins against The J. C. Lipscomb Com
pany. The suit was brought to re
cover compensation for services ren
dered. The magistrate rendered
judgment in favor of the plaintiff af
ter hearing the testimony and argu
ment of counsel.
