EVENTS IN GAFFNEY AND CHER OKEE- f Recent Happening* In and Around the City, and Other Events Gath ered by the Local Newt Editor. Come out to the Board of Trade meeting at the city hall tonight. 1 here will be service at the Episco- pay church next Sunday afternoon at 3 oclock by Rev. Babin, of Yorkville. Strangers cordially invited. Remember the Schuberts appear at the Star Theatr'e next Thursday night. This will probably be the last attraction of the season. Gentleman speaking to a lady who wag looking plump and rosy after a “round” with fever: “I’ll declare, the fever sure degreed (agreed) with you.” The Furman Glee Club will be at the Limestone College auditorium to night. These young gentlemen give a splendid performance and those who attend may expect a treat. Rev. S. B. Harper has been con fined to his bed since last Friday but is improving so rapidly that he ex pects to occupy his pulpit Sunday, morning and evening. Mrs. W. P. Nance returned from Greers Monday, where she had been on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. Ar thur Hasty, who hag been quite sicb, but who is now convalescent. The first strawberries of the season were sent to The Ledger yesterday by Mrs. N. M. Geddes, who lives on North Limestone street. “Uncle George” Byars brought them In. Mrs. Geddes has an up-to-date gardner, and she is progressive. The friends in this city of Will Has ty, formerly a resident of Gaffney, but now of Greers, will regret to know that he had the misfortune to lose his market by fire several weeks ago. Will had a light insurance and will probably go into business again. Dr. Simms expects to fill his pulpit as usual at the First Baptist church next Sunday morning and nigty*. The morning subject will be “Wihat Christ Foresaw.” Sunday school at 9:45 a. m. Visitors and strangers are cordi ally Invited to all of the services. Presiding Elder Mark L- Carlisle occoupied the pulpit of the Buford Street M E. church lat Sunday night He delighted his congregation with a very strong sermon. Dr. Carlisle Is one of the shining lights of the Me thodist church and always receives a warm welcome in Gaffney. J. B. Martin, a Cherokee hoy who has been in business in Birmingham, Ala., for some time, has returned to Gaffney and will reside here in the future. Mr. Martin will later engage In business here. We are always glad to have our boys return home and take up their permanent abode with us. Severa Important deals In real es tate are on foot in Gaffney at this time. Although money Is scarce so far ag we are able to see, Gaffney dirt is worth fnlly as much as It was when the money market was flush. It would take several panics like the one which we have just experienced tc down Gaffney. A company has been formed in Gaffney for the purpose of building a modem hotel in the city. The pro motors are J. A. Carroll, D. C. Phil lips, C. G. Parish and Z. A. Robert son. The building will be located near the Southern depot on the lot owned by D. C. Phillips and Z. A. Robertson and Is an ideal location for such & structure. The pulpit of Limetone Presby terian church will he filled next Sun day by Rev. George Ratchford, of Texas. This young divine was bom in the Lone Star State but his father is a South Carolinian, and Is connect ed by. ties of blood with some of our best people. We understand that Mr. Batchford 1b a young preacher of much promise, and we hope that he will be greeted by a latge congrega tion. For some days Mr. C. H. Robbins has been engaged with a force of hands lo moving his house from Fred erick street to hla lot on Smith street. At this writing the structure is in Limestone street where Fred erick intersets, and as the house takes up almost all of the space, It looks as if they will have trouble In getting It turned at this point. Al though the house Is not a large one, it is a considerable undertaking to move It, especially as the distance is so great. The play entitled "Popping by Proxy’’ which was recently given at the Cherokee Avenue new school building was so much enjoyed by all who attended that the young people who participated have been induced to repeat the performance. An eve ning of rare enjoyment is promised to all who attend me performance on Saturday night, April 11th. In ad dition to the play there will be spec ial music, drills and other features that will go to make the evening a most enjoyable one. Mr. R. C. Williamson, an expert from the works of the Muller organ factory of Hagerstown, Md., Is at' Limestone preparing to install the monster pipe organ which has arriv ed. The weight of the instrument Is ten thousand pounds and wagons are engaged in hauling it to the college. Limestone is to be congratulated up on being able to install such a mag nificent instrument. This instrument was purchased through Prof. W. L. Johnson, of this city and mabes the third instrument which he has placed in Gaffney. Mr. J. A* Mason Hurt. On Tuesday night Mr. J. A. Masoto bearded train No. 35 at the passenger station for the purpose of assisting Mrs. Mason and the children on the train. Before Mr. Mason could get off, the train had started and gained considerable headway, and In Jump ing he fell on the cement pavement next to the track mashing in one of his cheek bones and fracturing his skull. The Injured man was taken to his home where he was attended by Dr. Sherrard. Mrs. Mason and the children knew nothing of the accident until No. 35 met No. 36 at Cornelia, Ga., where Conductor Mauney informed them that Mr. Mason had been hurt, where upon they boarded No. 36 and return ed to Gaffney, reaching here at 8:05 Wednesday morning.
