Come out to the Board of Trade meeting Friday night and help push Gaffney. “The Messenger Boy,” which was to be at the Star Theatre Thursday night, has been cancelled. Floyd Spake is erecting a new five- room cottage on Rutledge avenue. It will be occupied by J. J. Gallagher when completed. Mr. A. A. Fisher, of Greensboro, N. C-, is in Gaffney in the interest of the Endowment Rank Knights of Py thias. Those who plant gardens in the ground are busy this week. Those who plant in the moon (one of whom we are which) will wait until next week. You can’t afford to stay away from the Board of Trade meeting. Let us have a rousing meeting Friday night, and show the people of the city that we mean business. Mayor Ross held his first court yes terday morning. Two unbleached denizens were before him charged with minor offenses. He fined one of them $5 and the other $2.50. The current from the Dravp works at Gaston Shoals was turned on in the city Sunday night, and from 10 o’clock until morning the power was furnished by the power company. The Ledger will be glad to publish the names of persons visiting in the city, if you will kindly ’phone their names to the office. In order that we may get accurate Information, this is necessary. The new council Friday night elect ed George E. Hood, clerk; T. H. Lit tlejohn, treasurer, and Butler & Os borne, city attorney. W. O. Johnson was elected mayor pro tem. All the police officers were re-elected. Mr. J. T. Burgess, who lost a fine mule a few days ago, had the misfor tune to lose another one Thursday night. Mr. Burgess s one of Chero kee’s most industrious farmers and the loss falls heavily upon him. A large number of people of this city have planted gardens. The wea ther for the past few days has been spring-like, and with the result that vegetation is springing up and the fruit trees will soon be In full bloom. An Interesting concert was given last Friday night by pupils of Lime stone College school of music, and the Choral Club. The work of the Choral Club was good and each num ber on the programme was well per formed. The audience was much larger than usual. Victor Corry was before Magistrate Bridges Saturday charged with dis posing of property under mortgage. The prosecutor was W -J. Maness. After hearing the testimony and ar gument of G. W. Speer, Esq., who re presented Corry, the magistrate dis charged 4116 defendant. Capt. R. M. Jolly, of Spartanburg, is in Gaffney. He is the pioneer of the good roads movement 1r Chero kee. Old man Dick always was fool ish about good roads, and will hardly talk on any other subject. It would be a good thing if a large number of our people would get foolish on the same line. Susan Lipscomb, colored, was be fore Magistrate Bridges Saturday charged with stealing a pair of glass es and a ring from Miss Mamie Smith. The evidence was purely circumstan tial and after hearing the testimony and argument of counsel, the magis trate very properly discharged the defendant. We regret tp learn through Mr. L. U. Campbell that owing to the death of Mr. T. C- King, one of the principal investors in the Flint Hill mine will mean a partial suspension of the work at the mine for a time. Mr. King was a metallurgist of much note, and was considered one of the wealthy and reliable men of New York city. Mr. H- S. Drummond, of Clifton No. I, has accepted the position of man ager for the Gaffney Manufacturing Company’s store, and will soon come to Gaffney to take charge. Mr. J. F. Carson, who formerly held this position, will embark in business on his own account soon, and his many friends are much pleased that he will remain in Gaffney. Next Sunday in foreign mission day jin the First Baptist church and Dr. , Simms urges every member to be 1 present and to pray for the work.. Mr. Lawton, of Greenville, a business i man, will be present and will talb to the men about the laymen’s move ment. Dr. Simms is anxious for his men to be in touch with men’s movement which are in action in all denominations. At the council meeting Friday night the report of the clerk showed that two years ago when the retiring coun cil came into office, there was a debt of seven thousand dollars hanging over the town, that this money had been paid, leaving a balance in the town treasury of over four hundred dollars. The new council will take charge with all outstanding obllgar tlons against the city cancelled and with something over four hundred dollars to their credit.. This is a mag nificent showing, £nd we do not be lieve that there Is a town In the State than can mabe equally as good ; showing. • v • • AT THE THEATRE. • • • The “Banker's Child The manager of the Star Theatre is pleased to announce that BBarry Shannon’s powerful four-act comedy drama, “The Banker’s Child,” will be presented at the Star Theatre on March 17th. This play Is vastly different from the usual run of comedy dramas, be ing devoid of shooting. Still the cli maxes are very strong. The play lias been re-written the past summer and more comedy added. The Sterl ing, 111., Press says: “The Banker’s Child” was present ed here last night to a crowded house, hundreds being turned away. The bright particular stars are two little children, who find favor with the old folks as well as the young. They have a genuine aptitude for stage work, or rather play, for it does not appear to be work for them, though both had lon^ and intricate parts. They are not stilted or tire some like so many stage children, and they had a splendid opportunity tb display their wonderful ability. Every seat was taken, including several extra rows of chairs, many standing besides.” Two Excellent Sermons. Dr. T. M. Bailey, of Greenville fill ed the pulpit at the Cherokee Avenue Baptist church Sunday at both the morning and evening services. His text for the morning service was, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven,” Matt. 5:16, and for the eve ning service it being, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross dally, and follow me,” Luke 9:23. He also made an excellent talk in the afternoon at the meeting of the B. Y. P. U. Fifty-six years ago Sunday Dr. Bailey preached his first sermon, and he has been secretary of the State mlsslnoary board for the past twenty-two years. Dr. Bailey Is an eloquent speaker and those who did not hear him Sun day missed a treat. \ • Dramatic Club. On next Monday night, March 16th, there will be a vaudeville entertain ment at Limestone College by the Dramatic Club. Among the acts to be given are a monologue, a short play, and a sleight-of-hand act. Re hearsals are being held daily, and this promises to be one of the best eatertainments of the season. The dummy will run, and the price of ad mission will be but 25 cents, tickets on sale at the door. The entertain ment is for the benefit of the pipe organ fund. Candidate for Board of Public works. Believing that the best interest of Gaffney will be served by the election of E. R. Cash to fill out the unexpir ed term of W. H.
