Plain Talks on Fertilizers
A Talk to Fruit-Growers
r
’TT
You use n fertilizer
of course, but do you
use enough?
The yield per acre,
and the profit therefrom
increases in far greater
proporl ion V han t he cost
of additioi 1 fertilizer.
What is an increase in
cost of $2.00 to $10.00
per acre for fertilizer
when the returns therefrom
show an increase of $50.00 to
$250.00 per acre?
The big Magnolia Fruit
Farms at Durant, Miss., tested
the well-known Virginia-Car-
olina Fertilizer
in different
quantities o n
their straw
berry crop.
Result: when
1,000 lbs. per
acre were used
the profit was
OO more per
acre than when
500 lbs. per
acre were used.
This is modern intensive cul
ture, the method that is doub
ling and trebling the crops of
all kinds of fruit in
cither good or in poor
and worn-out land all
over the country—and
in good soil, too.
The yield
c yi<
i r fl i
will be
according to the
amount of plant food
| you give your trees or
' plants — you can de
pend on it. The better
they are fed the greater
J and more valuable will
be your crop. Fertil
ize sparingly and you
reap sparingly.
The fact that over a million
tons of Virginia-Carolina
Fertilizer were sold last year
proves them to be witnout
equal. Every fruit farmer,
no matter what method he
now uses, should get the Vir
ginia - Carolina
Company’s
new Year Book
or Almanac.
It is free to all
who are inter
ested enough
to write for it.

Trousseau seta In New York; Bridal
Outfits of household Linens.
All the special linen stores and we
have a number of such places here,
are giving particular attention to fur
nishing “Trousseau Sets’’ as the wed
ding outfit of household linen has
come to be designated.
The foreign idea that a bride should
have a well-filled linen chest as part
of her outfit, has been adopted here
by the set of people who control the
styles, since what they do Is Invaria
bly copied. Fashionable dinner cloths
are of plain satin finished linen with
wide borders, and two monograms
are used worked at oppdiite diagonal
comers, placed so that they are well
up on the top of the table and not
likely to be covered by the china or
silver. Very large napkins, either
twenty-seven inches square after the
English fashion or twenty-six Inches
by thirty-six the oblong French shape
are used to go with these plain din
ner cloths. The napkins are folded
in three and the monogram comes in
the centre and Is placed on the ser
vice plate used at all ceremonious
dinner.
Lace and Fine Linen.
Marvellous are some of the clotas
made up of fine linen filet lace—a
square meshed lace made somewhat
after the style of Mexican drawn
work- but differing from that in pat
tern and general effect. Cloths and
doilies of this most costly style are
further ornamented with Insets of
Venice Point lace and patterns done
in fine hand embroidery. Such linens
are suitable for use only in the most
elegant and expensive establishments
but every woman with an eye for
artistic handwork is sure to admire
these creations which represent
months of skilled labor by many
clever workers.
All White Effects.
These cloths are used over white
or colored satin linings that throw
out the design beautifully, but the
preponderence of favor is for tables
where the setting is all white, color
being introduced only in the flowers
and favors. In accord with this plain
crystal with the monogram cut in is
reckoned better style than any more
fancy glass. Gold figured glass is
more often used at luncheons than
on dinner tables, and white and gold
china holds first place for the same
service, though none of these rules
are obligatory among the fashionable
set where each hostess is more or
less a law unto herself.
Lace Centres and Doilies.
Lace edged centres and doilies are
the proper caper as indicated by the
make up of the afore mentioned trous
seau sets, and this is a sensible as
well as a pretty fashion, for colored
embroideries are perishable under
the best of conditions and white
pieces do not grow tiresome as color
ed things have a way of doing. Colors
ed effects can always he obtained by
placing mats under the doilies and
centre pieces to correspond with any
desired scheme of decoration.
Novel and practical.
A novel and very practical set of
colored linings is easily ana mes»-
pensively made by purchasing some
of the new waterproofed wall cover
ing known as Sanitas and cutting it
into mats just a shade smaller than
the linen or laces of the dollies or
centres. This material can he had in
plain huffs, blues, pinks or greens
and its substantial texture is a great
protection to a polished table, while
such linings never wear out or fade
and a damp cloth renews their color,
for Sanitas is really a sort of glorified
oil cloth made up for wall hangings,
burlaps and leathers, as well as tiles,
and Imitates perfectly wall papers,
so that Its possibilities for household
uses are endless outside of its legiti
mate field as an artistic and sanitary
wall covering that needs only to be
washed with a damp sponge to re
move all soil or grime.
Shirt Waist Boxes.
Shirt waist boxes covered with
pretty chintz patterns of this ma
terial are both newer and more prac
tical than those upholstered In cre
tonnes or matting, and the plain
colors make the very prettiest and
cleanest linings for closet shelves
and bureau drawers. For linen
chests or closets this is especially
suitable, and can be matched in color
with the elastic and ribbon hands
that hold the sets‘of towels and nap
kins In even packages of a dozen or
more. A well kept linen closet Is a
Joy to every home loving woman and
should he considered in the plans of
every house as it surely would be If
there were more women architects.
Glass Cover Over Linen.
One of the most popular fads here
is to have glass covers made that ex
actly fit the tops of tea table, dress
ing tables, bureaus, and the centre
pieces used to adorn dinner tables.
These perfectly protect the delicate
coverings of embroidered and lace
trimmed linens, and all the washing
needed Is that given the glass to keep
It clear and bright. This practice is
certainly a gain for economy both in
preserving the linen and a saving of
the time and effort that must other
wise be expended in cleansing such
delicate handwork, but it Is seen
more just now In the more pretentious
homes of the Metropolis than in the
plainer ones where its practical ad
vantages should make most appeal to
the housewife.

Rational Pneumonia Treatment.
The most successful physicians are
now treating pneumonia by the ap
plication of counter-irritants. They
are learning to resist the temptation
to doctor the cough, which, after all,
is only nature’s effort to relieve her
self, and are endeavoring to reach
the seat of the congestion without
the use of internal remedies.
Some are using preparath r >? about
as pleasant to the patient as an ap
plication of mud or putty, but nie
wisest use a pleasant liquid counter-
irritant. .
The ideal remedy is Noah s Lini
ment. Its carefully compounded in
gredients possess wonderful powers
of penetration and immediately re
duce the inflammation and congestion.
Noah’s Liniment is absolutely
harmless, and can he used free y
without consultation with a P^ysi
clan. Apply the liniment freely ove.
the point of pain or congestion. Satu
rate a hot flannel and keep It aiv
plied to that portion of the body, T&e
effect will be almost immediate, and
in many cases the threatened pneu
monia will be dispelled before a phy
sician can be secured.
Best for rheumatism, solatia, lame
back, stiff joints and muscles, sore
throat, colds, strains, sprains^ cuts,
bruises, colic, cramps, etc. For in
ternal and external aches and pains
Noah’s Liniment has no equal. For

No old pi-re exists merely because the flesh is diseased at that partic
ular spot; if tliis were true simple cleanliness and local applications would
heal them. Whenever a sore or ulcer refuses to heal readily, the blood is at
fault; this vital fluid is filled with impurities and poisons which are being
constantly discharged into the place, feeding it with noxious matter and
irritating and inflaming the nerves and tissues so the sore cannot heal.
These impurities in the blood may be the remains of some constitutional
trouble, the effect of a debilitating spell of sickness, leaving disease germs
in the system, or the absorption by the blood of the fermented refuse matter
which tlie bodily channels of waste have failed to remove. Again the cause
may be hereditary, the diseased blood of ancestry being banded down tci>
posterity ; but whatever the cause, the fact that the sore will not heal shows
the necessity for the very best constitutional treatment. There is nothing
that causes more worry and anxiety than an old sore which resists treatment.
Every symptom suggests pollution
and disease—the discharge, the red,
angry looking flesh, the pain and in
flammation, and the discoloration of
surrounding parts, all show that deep
down in the blood there are morbid
and .dangeious forces at work, con
stantly creating poisons which may
in the end lead to Cancer. Local
applications are valuable only for
their cleansing and antiseptic effects;
they do not reach the blood, where
the real cause is located, and can
therefore have no real curative worth.
S. S. S. heals old sores by going down
to the fountain-head of the trouble
and driving out the poison-producing
germs and morbid matters which are
keeping the ulcer open. It removes every particle of impurity from the cir
culation and makes this life-stream pure, fresh and health-sustaining. Then
as new, rich blood is carried to the place the healing begins, all discharge
ceases, the inflammation leaves, new tissue abd healthy flesh are formed,
and soon the sore or ulcer is well. S. S. S. is the greatest of all blood puri
fiers and finest of tonics, just what is needed in the treatment, and in addi
tion to curing the sore will build up and strengthen every part of the system.

remedy for sores and obstinate ulcers. I n 18TT
I had my leg badly cut on the sharp edge of a
barrel, and having on a blue woolen stocking
the place was badly poisoned from the dye. A
great sore formed and for years no one knows
what I suSered with the place. I tried, if
seemed to me, everything I hail ever heard of,
but I got no relief and I thought I would have
to go through life with an angry, discharging
sore on my leg. At last I began the uce of
S. S. S., and it was but a short time until I saw
that the place was improving. I continued it
until it removed all the poison from my blood
and made a complete and permanent cure of
the sore. JNO. ELLIS.
