Miss Isabelle Free, of Blackville, will give her graduation piano recit al at Limestone College on Tuesday night, February 25th. It is said that the Southern will soon connect the Merrimac and Irene Mills to the main line by side tracks. This will prove a great convenience to these mills. The man that beats John Ross at the old fiddlers’ convention, will cer tainly get first prize. John surely slings a nasty bow. If he had two good arms he would electrify the whole country- There were six additions to the First Baptist church by letter on Sun day night. At the close of the ser vice Dr. Simms took an emergency offering to help a family in distress and the offering was very gratifying. The management of the Crescent Cafe has installed therein an electric piano for the entertainment of their guests. The piano is played by plac ing a nickle in the slot, and makes splendid music. The machine is equipped with all the latest music. Last Thursday night the store of Mr. J. H. Buice on north Limestone Street was broken into and eighteen or twenty dollars worth of goods stolen. The thief or thives effected an entrance through a rear window from which a pane of glass was miss ing. Mr. Buice will probably “round up’’ the guilty parties in a few days as he has a line on them. Dr. C- H. Wells, who is a native of South Carolina, hut who has been re cently located at Augusta, Ga., in the practice of dentistry, has bought out Dr. J. C. Thomson and has located here. Dr. Thomson has gone to At lanta. Ga. While Gaffney regrets to lose Dr. Thomson, we extend to Dr. Wells a hearty welcome and hope that his stay with us may be both pleasant and profitable. Jim Gentry, an unbleached juvenile, was fined fifteen plunks or thirty days on the gang for disorderly conduct and carrying concealed weapons. Early in the spring I broke my "nd with a one-horse turn plow as p as one good mule could pull. Then I laid off rows six feet wide, then bedded out with turn plow, leav ing a five Inch balk. When ready to plant I broke out balk with scooter plow. I followed In this furrow with disc plow with wing taken off. I ridged on this furrow with half shovel plow, still going deeper. I then opened this ridge with tongue plow. I dropped corn in thB> furrow eight Inches apart and covered. April 29th, when com was about six Inches high, I run arm. with a ten inch sweep; then I ran a center furrow in the middle with a shovel plow, then I bedded to that furrow with one- horse turn plow, throwing dirt from com. Then I ran around corn with a twelve inch sweep. On June 14th I put 400 lbs. of cotton seed meal and acid mixed In every other middle, this being the first fertilizer used at all; this went down in the old sweep, then I covered this with a turn plow, breaking out the middle. On June the 21st I treated the other middle the same way. This makes 800 lbs. used. Then on June the 28th I ran around com in every other middle with a sixteen inch sweep; then put 150 lbs. of nitrate of soda in this furrow, cov ered with one furrow with turn plow, then I sowed peas in this middle at the rate of one bushel per acre and finished breaking out this middle with turn plow. On July 4th I ran around the other middle with same sweep and put 160 lbs of Nitrate of Soda, covered with turn plow, sowed peas and brobe out this, laying by my com with a good bed to It In the Tall.
